Women's Day planned at United Metropolitan SPtX'IAl Id ] HI ( HKON1CU United Metropolitan Mission ary Baptist Church will celebrate its annual Women's Day on Sun day, Sept. 25, during the morning worship service. Minister Cynthia J . Rioland of Durham will be the guest speaker. The UMMBC Women's Chorus, under the direction of (Catherine Chavis, will provide music. Women of the church who are 75 years old or older will be honored. Rioland was educated in the Prince George's County Public School System in Maryland. She graduated from Florida Agricul tural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Fla.. with a Bache lor of Science degree in business administration. It was during her junior year of college that Rioland accepted the call to Christian min istry, and preached her initial ser mon at Paramount Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., under the leadership of Pastor Ishmael Shaw. After graduation from FAMU, Rioland returned to the D.C. Metropolitan area, where she served as a tull-time minister of music/youth at Paramount Baptist Church. She received her Master of Divinity degree from Howard University and was ordained through American Baptist Churches, USA. She has served as a missionary in Bermuda, an instructor for the Progressive National Baptist Convention Christian Education Congress, and youth consultant for the Dis trict of Columbia Baptist Conven tion. In addition, Rioland served as the first woman to speak at the Progressive National Baptist Con vention Young Adult Men's Ses sion. Currently, she is a full-time church business administrator at First Calvary Baptist Church in Durham, under the leadership of Pastor Fredrick A. Davis. Rioland is also ministerial liaison for the women's ministry and the con vener for the Triangle Cluster American Baptist Churches of the South. She is married to Kenneth Rioland Jr., and they have one son, Kenneth Rioland 111. This Sunday's worship serv ice will be the culmination of Women's Week at United Metro politan. The theme "Drawing Near to God" will be celebrated throughout the week during vari ous activities. On Wednesday evening, Bible study was led by Evangelist Velma McCloud of Piney Grove Baptist Church. On Friday evening, the women and their guests will enjoy "A Place at the Table with Him," a candlelight dinner in the church's fellowship hall featuring guest speaker Minister Ava Embry of Charlotte. All tables for the dinner will be uniquely deco rated by various women of the church. On Saturday morning, Rioland will be the guest speaker at a special breakfast. She moved to Winston-Salem 60 years ago. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday school, TNT. and a member of the Noonday Choir. She was a graduate of Russell Commercial School and a retired employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries. Her husband. Bennie Horace McBride and a sister, Ethel Riley preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories: a son. Bennie M. McBride of Winston-Salem: a daughter, Joyce M. (William) Smith of Rural Hall.
