Willard Fair will speak at New Atkins High School dedication programs The Simon Green Atkins Academic and Technology High School will hold its ded ication programs on Monday, Oct. 24, at 9:30 a.m. and Oct. 30 at at 3 p.m. Togo D. West Jr. will give the dedication address on the 24th and T. Willard Fair will be the dedica tion speaker at the 3 p.m. pro gram on Oct. 30. Both speakers are distinguished Atkins alum ni. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin each dedication, fol lowed by an official program. All Atkins alumni, former faculty and staff, friends and supporters, as well as the entire community are invited to attend the dedication celebra tions. Yard/bake sale for hurricane relief A yard/bake sale for Katri na hurricane relief will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 3200 New Walkertown Road from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. All proceeds will go to assist hurricane vic tims. Tutorial math/reading program Phi Omega Chafller - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is offering English and math tutoring through Dec. 13 on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church for high school students. Certi fied English and math teacher will be available. Applications are now available in the guid ance department. Space is lim ited to the first 20 students. Students should bring "College Board's Study Guide," the offi cial study guide for the SATs, to the first session of class. KEVIN WALKER THE CHRONICLE Each weekday, nearly 300 children are dropped off at the Sarah Alston Center, the coun ty's largest Head Start site. Their daylong slate of activities includes playing, learning and napping. And they are guided by a caring and capable staff of mostly women. There is only one male on staff at the center, and he has a nonteaching posi tion. For years, officials at the center have worked to provide the children with positive male influences. Head Start received a grant from the Winston-Salem Foundation eight years ago to hold leadership training for local men. Head Start's M.A.L.E. (Men Are Leading Examples) Coalition program grew from that training. "We were able to build a cir cle of males so that we could network," said Marcallus Sun day, Head Start's operations manager.
