Rotary Clubs seek scholarship applicants Group looks for students with high academic abilities for scholarships SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Rotary District 7690, cover ing central North Carolina, is looking for students with high academic abilities and strong desires to serve their fellowman to participate in the Rotary Foundation Scholarship pro gram. This program is one of the most prestigious in the world and has offered thousands of students the opportunity to experience the Rotary ideals of service and fellowship. Three types of scholarships are offered: ? Ambassadorial scholar ships with a value up to $25,000 are awarded for one academic year of undergraduate study in any foreign country that has a Rotary club. The pri mary purpose of an ambassado rial scholarship is to have the scholar serve as an ambassador of good will while studying abroad. The scholar agrees to partic ipate in Rotary activities (speeches, etc.) while in the country, as well as" when he or Local man becomes brigadier general SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE RALEIGH - Winston-Salem resident Mabry E. Martin was slated to assume the rank of brigadier general after a ceremo ny Oct. 7 at the Legislative Build ing in Raleigh. A 32-year veteran with the military. Col. Martin's current assignment is commander of the 113th Field Artillery Brigade After his promotion, he will assume the duties of assistant adjutant general for Army. He will be the principal advis er to the adjutant general of the N.C. National Guard on com mand and management priorities. Martin will be responsible for interpretation and establishment of policies from the adjutant gen eral and US. Army and monitor the readiness of all N.C. Army National Guard forces. Throughout his career, Martin has held positions of ever-increas ing responsibility. He has been a fire direction officer, executive officer, chief intelligence and security and crisis team leader in the Pentagon's Army Operations Center. His awards include: Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the N.C. Meritorious Service Medal. He graduated from Clemson University in 1973, earning a B.S. in ceramic engineering and later Wake Forest University with an MBA. He has completed many military schools, including Field Artillery Officers Basic and Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College and the prestigious U.S. Army War Col lege in 2003. earning an M.A. in strategic studies. He currently resides in Win ston-Salem with his wife. she returns to the United States. Students must have completed at least 2 years of college by the time their program starts. Three scholarships are awarded in the district. ? Cultural scholarships with a value up to $12,000 for three months of language study. The primary purpose of a cultural scholarship is to have the schol ar gain proficiency in a foreign language and to contribute to international understanding through study abroad. Students must have completed at least two years of college by the time their program starts. Three scholarships are awarded in the district. ? World peace scholarships for up to $50,000 and are to be used for a two-year period where the scholar pursues a master's degree-level study in conflict resolution, peace stud ies and international relations at one of seven World Peace Cen ters worldwide. Only 70 schol arships are awarded worldwide, and one candidate may be named from District 7690. Applications will be avail able from local Rotary Clubs in December and are due by March 2006.
