Saturday's Inaugural Global Festival at Diggs

A free festival spotlighting Ethiopian culture will
be held Saturday, Nov. 17, as the first in a series of
mini-festivals the Human Relations Department is
organizing with the help of local partners
Global Festival Series: Focus on Ethiopia will be
held in Diggs Gallery on the campus of Winston
Salem State University from noon until 3 pjn. The
festival is being held in conjunction with the arts
exhibition, "Continuity and Change: Three
Generations of Ethiopian Artists ."
The exhibition features modem and contempo
rary art within the context of the political and social
upheavals of 20th century Ethiopia.
Global Festival Series: Focus on Ethiopia will
provide hands-on exposure to Ethiopian arts, crafts,
foods, clothing and music. The festival will feature a
fashion show of traditional Ethiopian clothing, jew
elry and shoes. Arts and crafts projects will be avail
able for children ages 5 through 12. There will also

be an opportunity to pose
cultural questions to leaders and representatives
from the Ethiopian community ui the Tnad.
The program is being sponsored by Diggs
Gallery, Textures Art Gallery, Kidane Mehret
Ethiopian Orthodox Church of the Tnad. the N.C.
Arts Council and the Winston-Salem Human
Relations Commission.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The university seeks applicants for the position of Executive Vice
Chancellor for Strategic and Management Initiatives (VCSMI), in the Office of the Chancellor.
TheVCSMI is a senior position among the chancellor's senior staff. The primary responsibility
of this position is to ensure that the University's planning efforts and the chancellors
priorities and strategic and management initiatives are communicated, well-coordinated,
and implemented. By working closely with the chancellor, provost, vice chancellors, executive
assistants, deans, and others, the VCSMI will work to achieve a more coordinated and
integrated approach to an array of University priorities and goals. This position will also be
responsible for oversight of the Office of Human Resources.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Catalyze various initiatives of the chancellor by coordinat
ing the work of senior officers.
Ensure a more integrated approach to academic activities that entail cooperative efforts
with multiple divisions or schools.
Oversee functions reporting to the chancellor as needed to accommodate the shifting
demands of the Office of the Chancellor. This includes direct oversight of the Office of
Human Resources and therefore, the associate vice chancellor for human resources.
As a senior member of the chancellor's staff, advise the chancellor on a range of policy issues.
Ensure that the Office of the Chancellor is adequately staffed at the senior level and that
the duties and responsibilities of the senior officers are properly aligned with the strategic
and management initiatives as defined by the Chancellor. Manage senior-level searches so as
to eliminate the need for the hiring of search firms.
Assist and work with senior officers in the preparation of background materials to brief
the chancellor, and edit and provide input on content for upcoming presentations and decisions
Assist in the development of agendas for sanding meetings including, but not limited to
meetings with the chancellor, provost, other senior officers of the University and the Board
of Trustees.
Independently manage, oversee and implement special projects and initiatives as directed
by the chancellor. Conduct research! analyze issues and produce special reports and presen
tations as needed. Identify, develop and recommend changes to policies and procedures to
respond to changes in the internal and external environments.
Provide ongoing analyses of institutional planning efforts and conduct or oversee special
studies as needed to ensure that the chancellor's initiatives and University priorities are being
carried out at the highest level.
Evaluate the participation of external consultants on projects as necessary.
Represent the chancellor and serves as a liaison and internal spokesperson and primary
point of contact for the chancellor with all areas of the University, including high-level Univer
sity leadership and committees, external groups and professional organizations.
Acts as liaison with the University News Office and other communication channels to
coordinate press releases and announcements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Master's degree required. Prior
officer-level administrative management experience within higher education required. Broad
understanding of and experience with issues and policies in higher education required.
Excellent oral and written communications skills required. Demonstrated research, analytical
and computing skills required. Skills In resolving complex and divisive issues required.
