Ladson lands left hook against Bellamy during a previous bout. Ladson from page B1 smoking marijuana. I got locked up." Ladson has been incarcerat ed several times for a variety of charges. He's been to county jail six times, and has also taken seven trips to prison. He suf fered his lowest moments, that consisted of prison, drug deal ing, cocaine and crack usage, between the age of 13 and 27. "Then I decided it was time for me to change my life," Ladson said. "I went into the TEACH program and got clean. I always wanted to do right. It was just my environment. I made up my mind that I was going to stay clean. I even moved with my mother in Cleveland Projects. Then I start ed attending New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The Lord is the main reason I was able to make this transforma tion. I wouldn't be here without Him on my side. He's done so many marvelous things for me. "Now I'm focused on my goals," Ladson continued. "I was focused on getting back in the ring. I wanted to get back into boxing. In 1999, I met Whit, and I got back into box ing. Whit has been a big inspira tion in my life. He's been a father figure to me. We're a team. He teaches me about life 4 and boxing." Lowery wasn't really impressed with Ladson's boxing skills at first, though. "He was the worst fighter I ever trained when he first got here," Lowery said with a smile. "But he worked hard. Like I told you, he was humble. He proves that anything is possible when you listen at)d work hard." One fatal bout Ladson's dreams were put on hold two years ago when an opponent, who was a boxer from Georgia, was fatally killed during a bout with him. Ladson. who was heart broken after the incident, decided to give the sport up after that bout. He then spent more time with his carpen ter business, and in church ? where he serves as a deacon. But he continued to miss boxing. "I had to talk to him and let him know that it c wasn't his fault," Lowery said. "That was just an unfortunate situation. He wasn't the first boxer to have that happen. Sugar Ray Robinson also did it. Sometimes people get hurt in sports. Plus, the guy had prior headache problems. So, it wasn't Earl. He began to understand that." Ladson added: "I talked with his wife and they really pushed me to also get back into the ring. She assured me that he 4 would've wanted me to keep going, and that it wasn't my fault." Ladson hit the gym hard, and rededicated himself to box ing. After working 8 to 10 hours during the day, Ladson would then hit the boxing gym. He still runs three-and-a-half to four miles during the day. shadow boxes for six rounds, punches the bags for three rounds, jumps rope for three rounds, and then executes various conditioning exercises. On some days, Ladson simply spars and exer cises. "And I don't cheat mysejf," Ladson said. "I eat right. I rest right1. I don't do drugs. I feel great. I've been to camp with Calvin Brock. We've trained together. Right now I'm in top shape. I'm just hoping that I get a chance to upset someone. You never know. Buster Douglas was a journeyman. He had a record like mine. Somebody pulled out against Tyson, and he was there to take the fight. He went to the ring a broke man, and left the fight filthy rich. His next fight was $25 million. "So, you just never know," Ladson concluded. "I'm going to work hard. Hard work defi nitely pays off. I'm also going to continue to give glory to God. Through Him anything is possi ble. I'm thankful for every blessing He's given me." * Former Ram signs with Tampa Bay Storm CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT The five-time world cham pion Tampa Bay Storm haave signed offensive lineman Emmanuel Akah, head coach and general manger Tim Marcum announced last week.
