Michael Ferguson A&Ts Ferguson makes second team All-MEAC Aggie running bqck rushed for over 1 ,000 yards CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT Michael Ferguson put together the fourth best rush ing season in N.C. A&T foot ball history in 2007. For his efforts, Ferguson was named second-team All MEAC following the season. Ferguson became just the fifth different back in Aggie histo ry to record a 1 ,000-yard sea son. It was the sixth time a runner had exceeded 1 ,000 yards. Ferguson rushed for 1,169 yards and four touch downs in 2007. "I wish I had 20 more like him," said N.C. A&T head coach Lee Fobbs. "I've said since I got here, he has all the tools of a great running back. The young man has came through for us all year long. He's just an iron man as far as I'm concerned. He's put us in position to score all year long. I'm glad he is on our side." Ferguson has 1 ,906 career yards, which puts him 906 yards away from becoming the Aggies all-time leading rusher. Ferguson compiled six 100-yard rushing games on the season, including a 181 yard performance against Prairie View A&M. He had six runs on the season of 35 yards or more. Springs sets school record to commence season UNC-Charlotte track star Pat Springs , a former Ait. Tabor Spartan , is doing big things. Other local runners also pace 49ers at Clemson CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT 4 Former Mt Tabor track star Pat Springs started the indoor track season with some style over the weekend by setting a school record for UNC-Charlotte. Setting a school record, Springs, took first place in the long jump at the Clemson Opener last weekend as the Charlotte 49ers men's and women's track teams commenced the 2008 indoor season. At Clemson, Springs, who's a junior, anchored the 49ers with her first-place long jump finish, jumping 20 feet-five-inches (6.22m) on her second jump in the preliminar ies, breaking the record of 20' 1. 75" set in 2005 by Tawanna Norman. Her finish is a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championship. Springs also finished fourth in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 8.73 in the preliminary round, just 0.02 shy of her personal best from the 2007 campaign and 0.3 seconds faster than the time she recorded at the 2006 Clemson Opener. "Pat had a fantastic start of the indoor season," Olesen said. "While 1 expected her to have strong initial per formances, I am pleasantly surprised by the record and near personal best in the hurdles. The long jump was a bit unexpected as we've been training very nara ana sne s certainly not in pea* cnampionsnip rorm right now, so we're looking forward to some really exciting and unprecedented performances when the championships arrive in February and March." Springs was backed up in the hurdles by newcomers fresh man Tacara Morrisey (8.80) and sophomore transfer Sunita Braithwaite (8.89), both running personal bests and giving the 49ers three of the eight hurdles finalists. Springs, Morrisey and Braithwaite currently rank second, fourth and fifth, respective ly, on the Charlotte all-time top 10 list. Former Reynolds runners Korel Mack and Shanice Jones also put in a good day for the 49ers. In the men's 60m hurdles at Clemson, Mack also joined the all-time top 10 list at number four, running an 8.11 in the preliminaries and a 8.18 in the finals for fourth place. "We're really impressed with Korel, as he has adjusted extremely well to the collegiate height hurdles and will be pur suing the school record and NCAA provisional marks of 7.95 and 7.91, respectively, right from the start of his career," Olesen said. Freshmen Ebonie Cunningham, Yvonna Hines and Kortney Coleman also had solid first collegiate races in the 400m, with Cunningham winning her first collegiate race in 56.66. "We're picking up right where we left off last year with Coach Hall's women's sprint group already showing they will be deep and tough to beat at the conference level," Olesen said. The team of Ebonie Cunningham, Yvonne Hines and Kortney Coleman trio was joined by Shanice Jones, for an all freshen 4x400m team, finishing second in 3.50.99, ranking ninth all-time at Charlotte. Jones, a 400m hurdler in the offsea son, worked on her spring strength as well by racing the longer 800m, finishing a respectable sixth in 2.23.10. JV from page B1 turnovers. I can only imag ine how many they finished with. They're still a good team. And, I am sure they'll get better. We're going to con tinue to work as well. We hope to be ready for the Lash."
