Johnson from page A1 about Johnson's involve ment. In all. Johnson spent near ly three years behind bars await ing trial for his involvement in the murder. His supporters claimed that Johnson was being held with no evidence indicating that he was involved in the crime. They gar nered statewide and national support for Johnson through organizations like the N.C. NAACP and the black church. Public pressure helped win Johnson's release in September, right before Foster was named the special prosecutor. NAACP President William Barber had been escorting Johnson and his family on a tour across the state to help gain public support for Johnson's case. Barber and the Johnson family made stops in Winston-Salem on Dec. 16. "The light of Christmas has shown on the dark nightmare that James Johnson has suffered for 42 months in a false incar ceration on murder, rape, and kidnapping charges without a trial." Barber said in a statement on Dec. 19. hours after Foster's decision was announced . "Tonight the special prosecutor dismissed all murder, rape and kidnaping charges against him. It is a major victory for truth and justice." Johnson will face an acces sory after the fact charge, which stems from Johnson's admission thai he did help Meeks wash Willis' car after the crime in order to clear away evidence. Johnson says that Meeks showed up at his home after he killed Willis and ordered Johnson to accompany him to the crime scene and the car wash. Johnson said he went with Meeks out of fear. "James is an innocent young man who was falsely accused. It is not yet a total victory because one count of accessory remains, but we will celebrate tonight, and pick up the fight tomorrow for James' full exoneration tomorrow," Barber said. Keith's office will not prose cute Johnson on the accessory charge because the office is over burdened with cases of its own The N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts is expected to appoint at least one more special prosecutor to handle the new charges. a Foster, the former district attorpey of Rockingham County, reviewed thousands of pages of statements, conducted interviews and made several trips to Wilson during her review. Foster, who is African American and considered one of the best assistants in Keith's office, said in a statement that her decision was determined by the facts and not outside pres sure from either side. The center, which is funded by the hospital, grants and by dollars generated from things such as fundraisers, battles many different health problems within various minority groups. Its main areas of focus are infant mortality, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS and lack of immu nizations and cancer screen ings, all of which have been defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as areas where great disparities exist. Education is a major way the agency is fighting to end health disparities, according to Jaimie Hunter, .the center's research associate. The center spreads the word about disease prevention through "The People's Clinic," a series of health forums and programs designed to reach African American. Native American and Hispanic communities throughout the state. The proj ect includes a weekly health column that appears in minori ty publications. In 2005, The Chronicle became one of the first newspapers to carry "The People's Clinic" column. The project also has a radio show on "Que Pasa," a Spanish lan guage radio station and pro grams with Native American churches and organizations. Center staffers also stay busy with speaking engagements, health fairs and community presentations. "I think people get the major health issues and they understand that it's not good to be obese, it's not good to not exercise, but putting it into a framework that makes it rele vant to them - I think is what makes our project really spe cial," said Hunter. The center is. always trying to do more. Bell says future projects include a push to inform minorities about a recent study that found that low sodium diets can reduce hyper tension. The center also wants to set up kiosks in Latino com munities that will stress the seriousness of diabetes among Hispanics. The center's focus on Hispanics is vital, since lan guage may keep them from beneficial health information. Sarah Langdon, the center's associate project manager, has worked extensively with the Hispanic community. She says Hispanics are very vocal about their thirst for knowledge about health issues. Langdon said the center has found that it must not only talk but also listen to the concerns of those it serves. "We want and' encourage the community to be a part of what we're doing," said Langdon. "We realize only working with them as a partner are we going to be able to work towards eliminating health dis parities." One of the most ambitious programs in the region aimed at ending disparities, the center was created in 2003 to address the "national tragedy in health disparities," which experts say will only get worse as the minority population grows larger. The hospital approached world famous poet Maya Angelou, a resident of Winston-Salem, about using her name. Officials knew that with Angelou's name attached, the center would instantly get credibility and national recog nition. Angelou, who has been a faculty member at Wake Forest since the 1980s, agreed. The poet now serves as the center's honorary executive chair. Bell said Angelou pro vides valuable input for the center. Center officials are keenly aware that their work may never be fully completed. The teen pregnancy rate for minori ties is still higher than that of whites; the rate of minorities being infected with HIV is already monumental and grow ing; and whites still live longer and better than minorities. Bell, a native of Robeson County and a member of the Lumbee Indian tribe, says the reasons behind the disparities are many - with a lower level of disease prevention meas ures, cultural differences and economic and healthcare inequities among them. The center is always trying to gauge the impact that it has had. Bell said. Currently, focus groups and surveys are used to measure the success of pro grams like, "The People's Clinic."
