BYERS
Edward Denard Byers, 43 of
4260 Brownsboro Rd. Apt. B-25,
known to many by "Ed" and to his
family as "Poochie" passed away
unexpectedly on Thursday, March
13, 2008 at the Wake Forest
University Baptist Medical Center.
He was born March 26, 1964 in
Winston-Salem, N.C. to Amos
Byers, Jr., and Ella Mae Byers.
He was a member of Rising
Ebenezer Baptist Church which he
attended all of his life.
Byers was a 1983 graduate of
Parkland High School and a 1988
alumnus of Winston-Salem State
University. During his athletic
career, Ed received a full scholarship
for football at WSSU under former
coach Bill Hayes.
After college, he
tried out for the
NFL Cincinnati
Bengals. He was
inducted into
Parkland High
School Sports Hall
of Fame for excel
lence in football,
where his jersey
"No. 44" was retired. He was named
All-American and played in state
play-offs and championships.
Ed was currently employed with
Guilford County Scales Learning
Center, Greensboro, N.C. and with
WTB New Vision as a resident coun
selor. During his career, he was an
assistant coach for the Greensboro
Prowlers Semi-Professional Football
Team, Assistant coach at West
Forsyth High School-football,
WSSU Summer Camp-Football
director, coach for Little League
Football, various teacher assistant
positions for the WS/FCS School
System, and was also employed with
Douglas Battery, and Sara Lee
Textiles.
He was preceded in death by his
father;" and two brothers, Ozzie
Johnson and Maurice Byers.
Left to cherish his memories are
his wife, Robin Wilborn Byers of
Winston*Salem; three sons, Shelton
Davis. Sr., Monterio Davis, and
Juwaan Woodbury all of Winston
Salem; two grandsons, Shelton
Davis, Jr. and Jaiheem Davis; five
step-children; two sisters,
Gwendolyn Byers and Aretha Byers
both of Winston-Salem; three broth
ers, Rodney (Stacy) Byers, Sr.,
Vernon (Esthelita) Byers, and Tony
Ray Crosby all of Winston-Salem,;
one uncle. Earl (Patricia) Byers of
Winston-Salem; one great-uncle,
George Smith of Gaffney, SC.; an
aunt, Wilhemenia Byers of Winston
Salem; two special friends, Darnella
"Dee" Mclntyre and Ernest Tanner
both of Winston-Salem; and a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, other rela
tives and friends.

p.m. March 20 from the New
Jerusalem Missionary Baptist
Church. The Reverend William
Brown of Rising Ebenezer Baptist
Church officiated. Interment fol
lowed in Evergreen Cemetery. A

Juanita Ramona Haywood,
known to family and friends as
"Penny Wilborn," began her life
March 8, 1956 as the forth of 11
children born to Esther Mae Wilborn
and Grant Lorenza Young. She
departed this life on March 8, 2008.

Anna Louise Edmonds Jeffries,
84, passed away March 12 at
Springwood Care Center, Winston
Salem, N.C. She was born October
17, 1923 to Linia Wood and Eddie
Edmonds in Newsome, Va.
She was a member of the Beauty
Of lhe west.
Order of Eastern
Stars #36 and an
active member of
First Waughtown
Baptist Church
serving on the
Missionary Board
until her health
failed.
She was preceded in death by her
parents and her husband., Virgil G.

She is survived by two daughters,
Mary Carter and Pearl H. Fair both
of Winston-Salem; a sister, Callie
Artis of Shunsen City, Calif.; three
sisters-in-law, Mary Edmonds of
Chesapeake, Va.. Louise Edmonds of
Norfolk, Va.. and Henrietta Jeffries
of Magnolia. N.J.; seven grandchil
dren and many great-grandchildren;

MILLER
On "Thursday, March 13, 2008
God. out of his tender mercy, called
Cora Eva Mae Miller home to
Glory. Eva Mae was born to Clifton
Odell Miller and Cora Louise Miller
on October 15, .1946. She resided at
115 North Gordon Ave., Apt #2, but
spent most of her life in the Piney
Grove Community. Eva Mae was a
faithful member of Piney Grove
Baptist Church.
When she couldn't
make it to church,
she was always lis
tening to the
church services on
TV or listening to
it on the radio.
She was pre
ceded in death by
her father; brothers, Lester Odell
Miller, Romie Perry Miller, and
Larry Aldine (Caretha B.) Miller.
Her call to Glory leaves the fol
lowing to rejoice in her homegoing
and cherish her memory; her mother,
Cora Louise Miller; two sisters,
Brenda Faye Miller (Richard) and
Rebecca M. Butler (Wade) both of

ROGERS
Albert Smith Rogers, 85, depart
ed this life on March 10 at
Springwood Care- Center at 1:45
p.m. He was born the eldest of ten
siblings on October 12, 1922 in
Union, S.C. to Robert Lee Rogers,
Jr. and Cornelia Smith Rogers.
He attended
public school in
Santuc, S.C. He
was employed for
several years as a
material handler at
Hanes Mills on
? Stratford Road in
Winston-Salem.
After retirement he
worked part-time
at K&W Cafeteria on Healy Drive.
He was an active member of the
Senior Usher board at Mt. Pleasant
Missionary Baptist Church until his
health declined.
He was married to the late
Katherine E. VanEaton Rogers, and
in their union there were five chil
dren: James Washington (Stephanie),
Jackie Rogers (Peggy), daughter, the
Rev. Cornelius Joyce (Jerry), Simon
Rogers, Danny Lee Rogers, and one
stepson Charles VanEaton, all of
Winston-Salem.
He was preceded in death by his
wife, parents, and eight siblings.
Surviving siblings are sister,
Annie Ruth Richardson (Willie) of
Columbia, S.C., and brother, Robert
Lee Rogers (Robena) of
Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters-in-law,
Madie Rogers, Daisey Rogers, and
Mildred Tucker, all of Philadelphia;
five grandchildren, five great-grand
children; a very special friend of the
family, Immogene Bray, and several
other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1
p.m. March 14 at Mt Pleasant
Missionary Baptist Church.
Interment followed in Piedmont

THOMPSON
Bobby Joe Thompson, Sr. also
known as "BobCat" departed this
earthly life on Wednesday, March
12, 2008. He was born February 4,
1936. Thompson was a retiree of
'R.J. Reynolds.
He was preceded in death by his
parents Robert A. and Armenta
Thompson; a brother, Willie George
Thompson; and a daughter, Bobbie
Jo Ann Thompson.
He is, survived by his children,
Betty Dove Johnson (Joshua), Laurie
Thompson Murdock (Carl), Leilani
Thompson Reed (James), Bobby Joe
Thompson, Jr., and Barry Maurice
Thompson; 14 grandchildren, and 17
great-grandchildren .
Funeral services were held at 12
noon March 18 at United
Metropolitan Baptist Church. The
Rev. Prince Rainey Rivers officiat
ed. Interment followed in Evergreen

WHITE
Bernice White, of 1324
Belleauwood St., Winston-Salem,
N.C., was born May 11, 1936 in
Sumter, S.C.. She was the daughter
of Daniel and Mamie Washington
White. On Wednesday, March 12,
2008, God called His angel Bernice
to spend eternity with Him.
White attended public schools in
Sumter, S.C. and was a graduate of
Eastern High School. She accepted
Christ at an early age and became a
member of Saint Matthews Baptist
Church in Sumter. She served as an
usher and was also a member of the
choir while attending Saint
Matthews.
Bernice moved
to Winston-Salem
in her early 30's.
She was employed
at Forsyth
Medical Center
and worked there
for approximately
35 years retiring
in 20U4. Shortly
after her arrival in Winston-Salem
she became a member of Spencer
Memorial Christian Church where
she remained a very dedicated and
faithful member.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, three brothers, and a sister.
Bernice leaves to cherish her
very fond memories,, four sisters,
Thelma* White, Magdalene Barber,
and Lillie Mae White all of Sumter;
a very devoted sister and caregiver,
Frances (Gerald) Mobley of
Winston-Salem; a brother, Charles
(Felecia) White of Sumter; two
aunts, Mary Robinson and Lucille

WILLIAMS
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 ? "To every
thing there is a season, and a tilne to
every purpose under the heaven; a
time to be born and a time to die; a
time to plant, and a time to pluck up
that which is planted. "
That season and time came for
Virginia Williams on Tuesday,
March 18, 2008. To be absent from
the body is to be present with the
Lord.
Williams was the second child
born to Dorcy and Edna Mae
Daniels. She was affectionately
called Gin, Ginny, and Snapper by
family and friends. She was born
and raided in Florence, S.C. and after
high school; she relocated to
Newark, N.J.
Williams resided
in New Jersey for
most of her adult
life and later relo
cated to
Creedmoor, N.C.
She was
employed by John
Umstead Hospital
and retired after
20 years of faithful service. She was
of the Baptist faith and attended
Mount Vernon Baptist Church in
Creedmoor. Virginia was a quiet,
soft-spoken person with a beautiful
smile. She was loved by everyone
she met and she will sorely be
missed. She will be remembered as
"a person with a great sense of humor
and joviality. ?

by her parents, a sister, and a broth
er.

Ruth S. Winfield, known to fami
ly and friends as "Mother Ruth" of
831 Rich Ave., Winston-Salem, N.C.
was born in Lancaster, S.C. to

She was a faithful member of
Cornerstone Faith Ministries, where
she was the Mother of The Church
She was also a former member of
Hanes Creative Club, the
Inspirational Chorus of Hanes CME
Church, a retired household techni
cian of New York City, and a chore
provider of Forsyth County
Department of Social Services.
She was preceded in death by her
