Banks-Payne, Forsyth County's tenth district court judge, and second African American female judge was appointed by Governor Mike Easley in February. Banks-Payne grew up in Winston-Salem and graduated from North Forsyth High School. She furthered her academic career at North Carolina A&T State University, and graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2001 . She spent about two years in private practice, and in 2003, she joined the Forsyth County Public Defender's office. Zion honors longtime member Dr. Maya Angelou SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Many are the daughters of Zion who have done exceedingly well. In that number, count Dr. Maya Angelou, who was honored by her home church, Mount Zion Baptist Church, on Sunday, April 20 on the occasion of her 80th birthday. The event was an open opportuni ty for members and friends of Mount Zion to honor Angelou in the context of her Christian experiences ai& the company of her church family. - All of the desired elements of the day came together in an appropriate form during the salute to Dr. Angelou. The stirring music from the choirs reacquainted her with her grandmoth er's rendition of "Bread of Heaven." The full infusion of young people throughout the worship experience went to the heart of (her considerable love for children. An original poem penned by Naima Henderson revisited moments on and off the world stage in Dr. Angelou 's colorful life. A formal church resolution celebrated her mem bership "in good standing" at Mount Zion. The presentation of a commem orative plaque and a dozen red roses added the crowning touches to a day dedicated to a phenomenal lady. Following the formal presenta tions by members and officials of Mount Zign, the lady of the hour was Dr. Angelou accepts honors from Alvin Atkinson , Board of Deacons chair, Pastor Dr. Serenus T.
