Chatting with Hall of Famer Jones
former Carver and Wake star
bailer Porsche Jones is now a
Hall of Famer. She was recently
inducted into the Winston
Salem/ Forsyth County High
School Hall of Fame .
That's not the reason that 1
chose to talk to her this week. I
interviewed "P-Butta" because
she's one of my favorite former
female bailers. And, I simply
like talking to her. She's cool as
they come. Jones is also serious
as they come. She doesn't play.
That was evident during her
playing days. She was strictly
about business on the court ?
especially at Carver, where she
set the school's single-season
scoring record and helped the
Yellowjackets to a state title in
2001. She's actually accredited
with turning things around at
Carver.
"She resurrected the basket
ball program at Carver," said
Winston-Salem Sportsmen Club
president Robert Wynn. "The
(Carver) basketball team didn't
win many games before she
arrived. Carver was 2-70 before
she arrived. They were 50-1 with
her. They turned into a power
house with her."
She and talked a little basket
ball on Tuesday evening. We
also discussed her AAU team
(Team B.O.N.D), her new
nephew, Tony Parker, Louis
Lowery and seafood. I also
asked her what's good with her
love life. Take a look at what she
said during a very cool interview
earlier this week.
Anthony: Sorry it took me
so long, but I have been at a
press conference. They
announced the MEAC tourna
ment was coming to Winston.
Porsche: That's OK.
Anthony: OK. What's
going on with you Miss Jones?
Porsche: Nothing much.
I'm about to take me a lil nap
before I head to a meeting.
That's about it.
Anthony: I don't think I've
had the chance to speak to you
since you were inducted into the
hall of fame. Give me your
thoughts on having such an
honor bestowed upon you.
Porsche: Of all the awards
and- recognition that I've
received from basketball, this is
above them all. It didn't really
hit me until that night. That w^s
a major night.
Anthony: And, you gave the
best speech. One of your rela
tives told me that you basically
freestyled that speech.
Porsche: Yeah. People that
know me know that I'm kind of
soft spoken. I really don't say'
much. I'm a person of a few
words. I figured I would just
speech from the heart, and just
let it flow. That's what happened.

Local legend Porsche Jones receives her Hall of Fame medal from her grandmother.
Anthony: What was going
through your mind before you
actually had to speak?
Porsche: I was definitely
looking through the crowd and
seeing some of the people that
used to come to my games.
Coach Poe was actually out there
crying. I had so many things
going through my head.
Anthony: OK. Your AAU
team is doing big {hings. You're
presently 26-4?
Porsche: Right.
Anthony: First year, and
you're headed to the national
tournament. How excited are
you about that?
Porsche: Everything is still
happening kind of quickly.
We're doing better than I even
expected. But they're learning
things, and doing some of the
things that I've learned through
the years, i want to prepare all of
them to be able to go on and get
scholarships when they get older.
Anthony: You've coached
JV and varsity basketball. But do
you enjoy coaching 10 year olds
more?
Porsche: I actually enjoy
giving back, period. Whether it's
coaching, holding a camp or
doing anything. (Porsche paus
es.) Hey, Phyllis. But I would
say this 10-year-old team is my
bread and butter. That's what I
want to put my stamp on. These
girls are ready to learn. And,
they're very talented. Carver is
my heart. But Team B.O.ND is
my bread and butter.
Anthony: Do your younger
girts look up to you?
Porsche: Well, their parents
know more about what I've done
than they do, obviously. They
were all bom in like, '98. So they
don't know anything about me,
as far as seeing me play. But they
challenge me a lot in practice.
They want to race me, and play
me in horse.
Anthony: (Both laugh.)
How's the fundraising going? I
know you all had a car wash
over the weekend?
, Porsche: My car wash went
pretty .well. It actually rained a
little bit. That kind of slowed us
down. We're out here getting it
the best way that we know how.
We'll take all of the help we can
get to take us to the next level. If
anyone wants to help us, please
do.
kids in school. I help mentor and
keep them focused. And,
Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday, I have basketball prac
tice. It's kind of a busy day. I
work 10-12 hour days.
Anthony: So, what else has
been going on?
Porsche: I've been spend
ing a lot of time with my family.
My sister just had a new child, so
I have a new nephew. I also just
moved to Kernersville. I'm just
living life, and takipg it one day
at a time. Trying to experience
bigger and better things. Maybe
()ne-on-()ne
with Anthony Hill
Anthony: What do people
heed to do to help?
Porsche: You can call me at
336-995-8718 or email , me at
bondsskills at hotmail.com.
There's actually nothing on the
website about how people can
help.
Anthony: Um, don't you
think that needs to be available?
Porsche: I would do it if I
knew how. Scott Abdul, with
Scott Cares, is supposed to be
updating my site. Make sure you
put that in there.
Anthony: (Laughs.) Aight.
What does a normal day in your
life consist of?
Porsche: I work for
Advanced Placement. I'm con
tracted through the school sys
tem. I work with two or three
one day I'll be able to start a
family in the next couple of
years.
Anthony: (Smiles.) I hear
that. Have you been watching
any of the NBA playoffs?
o Porsche: Yeah. I'm a big
Tony Parker fan. But I was
cheering for Chris (Paul) during
that series. I haven't really been
watering it since the last series
because I don't think the Spurs
will get past the Lakers. But I
still love Tony Parker.
Anthony: But, is Chris the
best point guard in the league?
Porsche: Definitely.
Anthony: Aight. What was
the last movie you went to see?
Porsche: I went to see "Iron
Man" with my nephew and one
of my players.
Jones
Anthony: If you could play
anyone in one-on-one who
would it be?
Porsche: I would say, Louis
Lowery. (Giggles.) My record
.against him is 12-2. Put that in
there.
Anthony: (Laughs.) If you
could visit any place for a vaca
tion where would it be?
Porsche: It would probably
be Paris, France. I've never been
there. If anyone wants to take me
to Paris give me a call.
Anthony: (Smiles.) I hear
you. Since you're calling out
people. What's up with your love
life? What's good with that?
Hmm?
Porsche: (Laughs.) My love
life is just like my career. It's
headed in the right direction. It's
an uphill race, but I will get there
one day. I'm going to leave that
up to God.
Anthony: Good answer.
Who are the best players you've
seen?
Porsche: I would have to
say Ivory Latta and Alana Beard
were the toughest I've played.
Candace Parker is good too.
Anthony: Yeah, Candace is
a monster. Did you know that
Camflle and Ivory Latta play
together again?
Porsche: I didn't know that.
Anthony: Yeah, they both
play for the Atlanta Dream now.
Porsche: I didn't know that,
but that's what's up. Hopefully
they'll be on another level in the
next couple of years.
Anthony: What do you see
yourself doing in the next couple
of years?
Porsche: Well, I have my
hand in a couple different things.
I'm trying to start a chain of
group homes. 1 would also like
to be a head coach one day. I'm
fdso doing camps. My second
annual camp will be in August.
Everything is kind of surround
ing kids and giving back ? and
basketball. Basketball is a path
way to reach kids in a lot of
ways.
Anthony: \^hen was the
last time you talked to J-Ho
(Josh Howard)? How's he
doing?
Porsche: I talked to him two
days ago. He's doing good. He's
vacationing and chilling. He's
actually the sponsor of my team.
We thank him for everything that
he's done, even though a lot of
negative things are being said
about him. People fail to look at
all the positive things that he's
done and will continue to do. So,
shout out to LHo
Anthony: That's what's up.
If someone wants to take you out
where would they need to take
you?
Porsche: Let's see. You can
take me to The Seafood Shack in
Walkertown. They've kind of
claimed me. It's real cheap.
Anthony: (Smiles.) Oh,
ybu're an good date.
Porsche: I'm a great date.
Anthony: Aight. If you
could date any celebrity who
would it be?
Porsche: Oh, Lord. There's
so many. Can I give you my top
5?
Anthony: Sure.
Porsche: Nah, just leave it
at Tony Parker.
Anthony: (Laughs.) OK.
I'm not going to say anything
about you not naming any dark
brothers. That's going to upset
some folks.
Porsche: I know. Don't
even put that in there.
Anthony: Whatever. (Both
laugh.) Let's finish with free
association. Um, Porsche Jones.
Porsche: Great person.
Anthony: Team B O N D
Porsche: New AAU organi
zation.
Anthony: 10U National
Champs.
Porsche: Team B.O.N.D.
Anthony: Josh Howard.
Porsche: BigCuzzo.Oneof
the best players to come out of
Winston-Salem.
Anthony: Wake Forest.
Porsche^ A great school.
Anthony:* Coach Derrick
Speas.
Porsche: (Laughs.) No
comemnt. Nah, he's good friend,
coach and trainer.
Anthony: Margaret Harvey.
(Forsyth Country Day senior).
Porsche: Great player. I
think she will do well at Wake.
Anthony: Last question. Do
you think FCD should be
allowed to play in the Mary
Garber? 0
Porsche: I don't mind. Not
at all. But they're going outside
of the public school rules.
They're bringing in girls from
overseas. They've got a little
prep school. TTiat would be the
only problem. I wouldn't have
an issue if I were playing. As a
coach, that's different. You know
what I'm saying?
Anthony: I got you. We're
done. I will talk with you later.
Porsche: OK. Thank you.
Ant.
