Gethsemane Hope Missionary Baptist
Church is sponsoring a carnival on June 14
at 11 am. There will be games, prizes,

Healing Crusade
A Healing Crusade will be held at New
Life Family Worship Center on June 13 at

District Four Conference
The District Four Group One

annual State Convention June IS -17.

St. Philips to install new pastor

St. Philips Moravian Church, the
oldest standing African-American
church in the state, will install its
new pastor on Sunday, June IS at 11
a.m.
The Rev. Dr. Christopher E.
McCoy was born and raised in
Winston-Salem, and has obtained a
Bachelor of Arts degree in religion
and philosophy and Master of
Divinity from Shaw University. He
earned a Doctorate at Stamford Hill
University of London.
He was ordained in 1988 and
served as minister of music at Mt.
Carmel Missionary Baptist Church,
where he delivered his initial ser
mon. While attending Shaw Divinity
School, he was called as the assistant
pastor at St. Stephen Missionary
Baptist ChWch, serving with Rev. J.
R. Samuels. McCoy continued his
ministry by teaching seminary at
New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist
Church.
Dr. McCoy is also retired from
United States Navy. While in the
service, he sang with the
Philadelphia Mass Choir under me
direction of the late Rev. James
Cleveland. He brings more than 20
years of experience and service to the
pulpit. McCoy plans to back the lega
cy of St. Philips as being a strong
tower within the Bon Air Avenue
community and the city.
He is married to the former Karen
Young and has three sons, one grand
son and a stepson.

Union to hold Arts Festival

The Union Baptist* Church Performing Arts Ministry
will present its 3rd Annual Performing Arts Festival, "I
Thirst for Thee," from June 20 - 21 . Community night will
be held on Friday, June 20 at 7 p.m. It wil feature the UBC
Steppers and Male Mimes along with other churches'
dance and mime ministries, including those from
Ambassadors Cathedral, Christian Fountain Church, Praise
in Motion of Capital Heights, Md.; Power House
Deliverance Garden Cathedral of Greensboro; Silent
Impressions Adult Mime Ministry of Greensboro; Temple
Memorial of High Point; and Union Baptist Church of
Lexington.
? On Saturday, June 21, at 5 p.m., the Union Baptist
Performing Arts Ministry will present a full concert. The
Ministry has (Four liturgical dance groups - God's Anointed
Praisers (GAP), for four-to-ten-year-olds; FAVOR, for 11
to- 16-year-olds; Women of Worship (WOW); for more
mature ladies; and God's Golden Angels Dance Ministry,
for "seasoned women."
Two mime groups, one for children and one for adults,
both called God's Unspoken Word in Motion, are also a
part of the Performing Arts Ministry. Each group will per
form.
"Dance and mime, as in any other worship area, is to be
directed to God," states Music and Fine Arts Director
Walteria Spaulding. "The groups minister through dance
and mime during worship services and programs."
The festival is free and open to the public. For more

McCarter Fellows host golf event

The McCarter Fellows of the Greater
Cleveland Avenue Christian Church
held its second annual golf tournament
on Saturday, May 3 1 at Olde Homeplace
Golf Club. Eighteen teams of golfers
^competed for various prizes, including
first, second and third place trophies.
Among the approximately 70 partic
ipants in the tournament were teams rep
resenting five different churches:
Galilee Baptist Church, Greater
Cleveland Avenue Christian Church,
Outreach Christian Center of Salisbury,
Saint Peter's World Outreach Center and
Union Baptist Church. The winning
church-sponsored team was awarded a
traveling Unity Trophy that it will keep
until next year's tournament when the
trophy will "travel" to the church that
wins ifi 2009. Greater Cleveland
Avenue won the Unity Cup at this
year's competition.
Other awardees were: Jan and Jay
Bailey, Hiawatha Bethea. and Larry Joe
as the Best Team; Sophie Rucker for the
longest drive and the straightest drive;
Ernest Timmons for closest to the Pin;
and Toma Banner, James Melvin,
Richard Pugh, and LeRoy Purdy for
Best Dressed Team.
Individuals and corporate sponsors
generously supported the tournament by
either donating food, sponsoring a hole.

donating various prizes or gift certifi
cates. The corporate sponsors included

The McCarter Fellows are young

Avenue Christian Church between the
ages of 12-18. Bishop Sheldon
McCarter founded this male group as a
means of instilling in them sound
Biblical principles. He, along with
committed men of GCACC, teach the
young males how to become strong
proud men of God. About 40 McCarter
Fellows served as volunteers at the tour
nament.
