Jesus the Redeemer
Hebrews 9:11-18; To7l2
14,17-18
Lesson Aims: to compare
the sacrifices of the Levitical
priests to that of Jesus, to rec
ognize that His superiority,
and to remain loyal to Him at
all times.
Background: The writer
continued to build his case on
the "superiority of Christ". His
desire was to convince the
Hebrew converts to remain
loyal. While the Old System
(Mosaic Covenant) was in
place everything was fine as It
foreshadowed the future. Jesus
became the fulfillment estab
lishing the new and better
Covenant with all people. The
writer guided them to see the
connection between the Old
Covenant under Moses and the
New Covenant in Christ. He
/^i
i
lumpaicu me Levitical priests'
roles to that of Jesus as High
Priest. In every aspect, Jesus is
superior! As he built this
image, he added a new ele
ment. Not only was Jesus.
God's Son the Great
Intercessor, He is also the
Redeemer. Once a year on the
Day of Atonement (forgive
ness) the high priest entered
the Most Holy Place (Holy of
Holies) with animal blood to
ceremonially cover his sins
and those of the people.
Dressed in all of his regalia,
presents blood to God to renew
the covenant relationship. God
could accept or reject the
offering. The Bible Expositor
and Illuminator presents "sin"
as the perennial (constant) and
basic problem of the human
race. Think about it, until
Adam and Eve decided to eat
from one of the forbidden
trees, there was no sin! Sin
separates humanity from God.
The sacrifices of the Old
Covenant "covered sin" and
redeemed the people temporar
ily thus the offerings were
done annually. Even then God
was preparing (forty-two gen
erations) the ultimate sacrifice
to end the cycle.

School Lesson
Lesson: Jesus is presented
here as the perfect sacrifice.
He is the Sinless High Priest
who becomes human that He
can identify with temptations.
He enters the Holy of Holies
(Calvary) to purge the sins of
humanity once and for all.
There is no longer a need for
sacrifices to cover sin. Read
verses 13- 14 and think about
the message. The Levitical
sacrifices only touched the
external while the Perfect
Sacrifice operated within
(faith) that the new creature
could be seen. In setting
humanity free from the
bondage of sin. He becomes
the mediator between us and
God. The writer encouraged
them not to get hung up on
Jesus' death by, using a legal
will as the example. To ratify
the New Covenant, death was
necessary. In order for the will
to be valid, the person must
die. He doesn't mention it here
but Jesus arose from the dead!.
His work on earth completed.
He sits on the right hand of
God. His sacrifice alone is
enough for all time! His act
makes believers perfect forev
er in that we are progressing
towards the mark. There is no
need for another sacrifice. Go
back and read Jeremiah 31: 27
34. If the Hebrew <;on verts go
back to the old way , they are
denying the completed work of
Jesus Christ
Application: For all have
sinned either by commission
(performance) or omission
(shortage). Our relationship
with God is severed! How can
it be fixed? Jesus, the Sinless
High Priest gave His life to
redeem believers back to God.
Don't go back to whatever you
previously practiced or ?
believed. Christ is the Only
Way! He was promised in the
Old Testament and God is
Faithful - He delivered. There
is no need for blood sacrifices
any more - Jesus paid it all.
Our sins are like scarlet but He
washed them whiter than
snow! He is our mediator
before God. Don't go to
Judgment wjthout Him!
