"Probably the most grati

give due respect and honor to
the firefighters that passed
away and to their families,"
said Peggy Abundiz. "I think
that's the most meaningful
part of the journey.
"A lot of times, these guys
retire and you hear two or
three years down the road ..
'he died, he passed away and
it was from cancer,'" she
added.
The Code 3 crew learned

Hugh Parham Stanley III
lost his fight against cancer
last November, at the age of
two and a half, but not before
expressing a love for fire
engines and a desire to
become a fireman someday.
Stanley's dreams were cut
short, but his life was greatly
impacted by the firefighters in
his hometown of Greenville,
N.C., who visited him in the
hospital by hoisting them
selves up in the fire truck's
bucket to . (lis window. They
served as pallbearers at his
funeral and a fire engine led
tne procession.
Jennifer Stanley, Hugh's
mother, says she feels a strong
bond to ail firemen because of
the compassion shown by
those men.
She presented the Code 3
crew with a framed image of
her son Monday and asked
that they carry it with them in
his honor.
"He's going to ride with us
all the way," Mr. Abundiz told
Stanley in a reassuring tone.
"He's up there in fire station
heaven, protecting the streets
there."
