School Lesson
Lesson Scripture: Mark 1 : 29-45
o
Lesson Aims: To explain Jesus' role as
healer, to be compassionate towards others,
and to make a difference in someone's life.
Background: Our lesson today comes
from the Gospel of Mark. The shortest
Gospel was penned by Barnabas' nephew,
John Mark who isn't mentioned until Acts
12:12. This action packed book only uses
three verses in its introduction. From there,
John the Baptist came on the scene preach
ing repentance (vs. 4-8). In verses 9-20,
Jesus was baptized, tempted in the wilder
ness, chose four disciples, and began His
Galilean Ministry. Verses 21-28 and Luke
4:31-37 reported the same miracle. This
was also part of last week's lesson. During
His ministry, Jesus healed quite a few peo
ple but He also preached "Good News" to
the poor. As we begin this lesson it is
important to remember the mind set of
Jewish society. Sickness and other infirmi
ties were the direct result of sin committed
by the one ailing or another family mem
ber.
Lesson: The series of miracles continue
with Peter's (Simon) mother-in-law being
healed. Jesus takes her hand and helps her
get up. With the fever gone, she ministers
to them. Word spreads rapidly about His
healing powers. Many bring their loved
ones to Him after the sun sets. He refuses
to allow the demons to identify Him. The
Echoes Adult Teacher Commentary states
that "Jesus wants the Holy Spirit to reveal
His identity not evil spirits." Early the next
morning. He seeks solitude to pray. Simon
and the others look for Him. They inform
Him that the people are gathering. Jesus
tells them "let's go somewhere else. He
wants the disciples as well as the others to
realize that physical healing without trans
fp?matio'n (repentance^ means nothing! The
Wesson enas when' the leper cries out for
healing. The cry of the leper fills Jesus
with compassion. He then defies the Law
by touching this unclean person and heals
him. More and more people are seeking
Him to be healed. The crowd becomes so
large that He can no longer enter a city.
Application: There are a great number
of us who question "why does He heal oth
ers but not my relative". No one doubts His
power but too often we miss the point! He
can heal all! It doesn't matter if it is physi
cal, mental or spiritual, He has the power!
We need to recognize His power to trans
form. While all are not healed physically,
He fixes the broken places in our lives. He
loves and cares for all humanity. Seek Him
today and live recognizing that the blessing
isn't always physical healing. Churches
then are the healing stations for the sick.
Allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with com
passion so that the least, the lost and the
left out are not shut out!!

Minister Deitrick Haddon of Atlanta will be
on hand for the conference.
Haddon has made his mark in progres
sive gospel styles. Drawing on a range of
secular music that extended from classic
soul to hip hop. Haddon made a point of
using his music as a ministry to the
unchurched. "Lost & Found" was his break
through album. With its funky, partly rapped
hit single "Oh Yeah." Haddon concocted a
Hunter
I
state-of-the-art, big-beat, hip-hop-influ
enced sound that still left room for tradition
al call-and-response between leader and
congregation ("If Jesus Christ is runnin;
your life, say 'Oh yeah!'"). Haddon was
sometimes compared with the similarly
eclectic gospel singer Tonex, and
like that California-based artist, he
tried to head off criticism from those
who might feel his style was too sec
ular.
Haddon and his wife Damita. a
gospel singer and former member of
the group Adoration 'n' Praise, have
taken steps to bring large numbers of
other young singers into the gospel
music fold.
