The Chosen Generation Ministry of
Piney Grove Baptist Church will sponsor a
Youth Conference. On July 16, Min.
Jeremiah Shipp was the speaker. On July
17, Minister Kia Hood of Union Baptist
Church will speak, and on July 18, the Rev.
Trevor Beauford, of Friendship Baptist
Church of Charlotte, will be the speaker. All

Youth Jubilee
St. Mark Baptist Church Youth Ministry
will present its annual Youth Jubilee July 16

Anniversary

Elder Mitchell takes over at Ephesus

Elder Godwin R. Mitchell was
installed June 28 as the new pastor of
Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist
Church. Elder Venard J. Mendenhall,
president of the South Atlantic
Conference, officiated the installation
service.
A native of St. Vincent, West
Indies, Mitchell was raised in New
York City. He earned a Bachelor of
Theology degree from Oakwood
University in Huntsville, Ala.

service as a self-supporting literature

taken him to

New CD, DVD chronicles Caesar's storied career

With 42 albums and eight DVD
releases, the first lady of gospel,
Shirley Caesar, isn't showing any signs
of slowing down.
After 40 years as a gospel super
star, Caesar, who is in Winston-Salem
this week hosting her Wilt Thou Be
Made Whole conference, is adding one
more CD and DVD to her repertoire.
The 12 song compilation disc,
"After 40 Years. ..Still Sweeping
Through the City" was released last
November. Its companion DVD hit
stores on June 24. Both are on the Shu
Bel/Light Records label.
The CD and DVD combo feature
rare, classics from the gospel diva from
the 1970's, such as "Faded Rose",
"How Many Will Be Remembered?"
and a medley of "Peter Don't Be
Afraid," "Nobody But You, Lord" and
"Teach Me, Master."
1980s hits such as "Jesus, I Love
Calling Your Name," "He'll Do It
Again", "Peace in the Midst of the
Storm" and "Never" are also included.
Caesar first burst on the national
music scene when she joined the leg
endary Caravans gospel group in 1958.
For almost a decade, she was a fan
favorite with hits such as "Sweeping
Through the City." She went solo in
1966 and released her first solo LP,
"I'll Go," the following year. After that
project produced her first solo hit,
"Choose Ye This Day," there was no
stopping her surge of hits, which went
on to include "Hold My Mule," "Don't

The CD/DVD, celebrating Caesar's

Chris Leak
Church to
honor 'the
Maestro'

Solid Rock Baptist Church
will celebrate the anniversary
of the Anointed Voices and
host an Appreciation Service
for Christopher Bernard Leak.
Both events will take place on
Sunday, July 20 at 4 p.m. at
the church, which is located at
3010 Carver School Rd.
Affectionately known as
"Chris," Leak is the leader of
the church's Anointed Voices
choir. He is the second child
of the Rev. Charles W. Leak
and Beatrice S. Leak. God has
always had His hands on
Leak. He suffered a third
degree burn over much of his
body when he was a baby, but
God miraculously healed him, ,
leaving only a minor scar.
Leak is a graduate of Wake
Forest University, where he
received the Bachelor of Arts
Degree in business and
accounting in 1985. He began
his professional career with
Central Carolina Bank. He is
presently employed at Morgan
Stanley Financial.
His music career started in
his early teens, when he took
music lessons with Adele
Scott. David Allen and
George Pass were also early
musical influences. He earned
the title, the "great maestro,"
by first playing for the Young
Adult Choir of Phillips
Chapel Baptist Church. He is
currently the minister of
music at Solid Rock and is
also one of the church's
founding members. He is
known for his love for God,
his mother, father, sister, his
three nieces and great nieces
and nephew. He also has great
unconditional, extended love
for the children and the fami
lies that he has nurtured.

Humanity vs. Pride
Lesson Scripture: John 13:1-20
Lesson Aims: To explain the
meaning of Jesus washing His disci
ples' feet, to understand that humility
is better than pride, and to incorporate
humility in our lifestyle.
Background: The public ministry
of Jesus ended in chapter 12 with Him
being anointed by Mary of Bethany;
entering Jerusalem for His last
Passover; and by Him predicting His
crucifixion. Chapters 13-17 recorded
His final ministry with His disciples
alone. Baptized about three years
before He constantly acknowledged
that "His time had not arrived". On
several occasions He told the demons
to be quiet about His identity. The
phrase mentioned earlier meant that it
wasn't time for the people to really
know who He was. Yes, from the
beginning a few knew - His parents,
the wise men and shepherds, Simeon
and Anna in the Temple. John the
Baptist, His forerunner knew yet down
the road questioned. The well meaning
disciples thought they knew but their
behavior later on in chapter 18 indicat
ed their lack. Most people thought that
He was going to lead a rebellion
against Rome. Some simply felt that
He had the gift of healing and that was
all. Three years passed as He demon
strated through preaching, teaching,
and healing who He was. Now in
Jerusalem for His final Passover, it is
time to reveal His true identity for all
to recognize.
Lesson: Jesus' time has come!
Before His departure. He gives them
an extensive review of everything that
He has taught them. The "real" Lord's
Prayer is found in chapter 17; read it
when you have time. As the Master
Teacher, He not only shares the Word
of God but He lives it. His commit
ment to God isn't a day of the week, a
phrase, nor an outfit - it is a lifestyle.
His time is now! It is time for Him and

The Inspirational Choir of Mount Zion Baptist Church
Choir will celebrate anniversary

The Inspirational Choir of
Mount Zion Baptist Church will cel
ebrate its 31st Anniversary on
Sunday, July 20 at 4 p.m. in the
church's sanctuary.
Several guest choirs have been
invited to help the choir celebrate its
anniversary: The program's theme is
"Empowering Souls for Christ," and
soul-stirring and spirit-filled music
will be plentiful.
Dion Owen is the director of the
Inspirational Choir. Other leaders of
the group include: Pianist Kevin
Scott; Bassist Robert Orier;
Percussionist Melvin Johnson and
Organist Brandon Jenkins.
Mount Zion Baptist Church is
