Jesus is the Messiah Lesson Scripture: Matthew 16: 13-23 Lesson Aims: to summarize the lesson Scripture, to understand and appreciate what Christ (the Messiah) did for humanity, and to witness to someone that will strengthen and/or enlighten them. security (individual and corporate); and bring peace. The book of Isaiah recorded the most comprehensive description of the Messiah. This was around seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus. Hundreds of years passed and there was no revelation from (Tod. Judah and the surrounding areas became part of the Roman Empire. They were waiting for a Background: The term Messiah / Christ simply means "anoint ed". In the Old Testament, kings were set aside for special services. Do you remember Saul and David's anointing? "It also refers to an expected or longed for Saviour in the Jewish tradition" (The Oxford Companion to the Bible) Messiah was the Hebrew term while Christ was the term for the Greeks. Scriptures indicated that God intervenes in human history to .deliver His people. The Jews continue to wait for their Messiah while Christians believe that Jesus is the Anointed One. Even in the surrounding cultures, the term was used in a very loose way. The Anointed One will be a revolution ary leader that will end injustice; promote the world forever. Jesus taught throughout Galilee. He chose the Twelve as He continued His Ministry of teaching, healing, casting out demons, and raising the dead (Jairus* daugh ter). The Twelve have heard His Word and witnessed the miracles. They also saw how He handled opposition. Many people had their own ideas about who this Man was. See Peppers on BH deliverer to rid them of the pagans. At times the Romans were cruel and unmerciful with a corrupt tax system. Many of the subju gated people were waiting for a big change.
