Pierre, a rising junior from Winter Haven, Fla.. will be the latest in a long line of Saint Augustine's College stu dent-athletes to compete at the Olympics. She is the two time NCAA Division II national 100-meter and 60 meter champion. This is her first Olympics. o .Three former Saint Augustine's College student athletes are competing at the Barbara Pierre Olympics in track and field as >vell. Bershawn Jackson of the United States and Adrian Fiadlay of Jamaica are partic ipating in the men's 400 meter hurdles, and Kia Davis of Liberia is running in the women's 400-meter and 200 meter dashes. Jackson, the 2005 400-meter hurdles world champion, advanced to the Olympics by winning his event at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in June. The preliminary rounds for the women's 100-meter dash and women's 400-meter dash start on Saturday (Aug. 16). The men's 400-meter hurdles prelims begin on Friday, and the women's 200 meter dash prelims are set for Aug. 19. Tabor from page A7 "I think the state champi onship game put a taste in the kid's mouth." Marshall said. "They realize it's a long sea son. Championship games are won ii^ November and December. That's a long ways away. We're starting to con centrate on Southern Durham. And we're scrimmaging Glenn on Friday. We're start ing to get into real football and hitting shape. We're try ing to get as close to game shape before Aug. 22 as we can. We just want to get better every day. We're trying to get better right now." o Key Players The Spartan offense will be led by 100-meter national champion Hunter Furr, who recently committed to play football for UNC. He spent the off-season working on his balance, agility and lateral quickness at a running back camp during the summer. He's one of the only skill players returning that started on last year's team. Sophomore Brad Morton, who was a top rated JV quarterback last year, will start at quarterback for the Spartans this season. Denard Jones will also get some snaps at quarterback. "We have a formation that allows Brad to go to wide out when Denard gets at quarter back," Furr said. "It's pretty exciting. We've got some good guys on offense. Our line i? solid with guys like Kevin Glenn, Leron Fuller and Chris Manns. Brad is going to do a good job for us at quarterback. And, Denard is the ultimate role player. He's going to do good things for us at running back, quarterback and wide out. I think quite a few guys are going to help us this year." Some of the other keys to offense will be Willie Ashford (receiver), Peyton McCollum (wide out), Bryan Cunningham (running back) and a collection of other Spartans. The Mt. Tabor defense looks to be stronger than it was a year ago. It's led by Parker Thomas (defensive Photo by Charlie Plait Mt. Tabor sophomdre quarterback Brad Morton takes off after a reception. Morton is a versatile quarterback. end) and Lamont Atwater. Guys like Ryan Anderson (linebacker), Chri$> Nance (defensive line), Thomas Warren (defensive line), Matt Turner (defensive line), Des Parker (defensive back), El Shabazz Weatherly, Trey Crosby and others will also be expected to play big. Furr will also play some safety this sea son. "This team has a real good mixture of young and older talent," Marshall said. "We're putting in a new defense. The guys are adjusting to it well so far. We feel good about some guys. There's still a lot of guys that we don't know about. A lot of our skilled guys on offense will be new guys. We're playing a lot of young guys or non-starters from last year on offense." The Spartans also have quite a few talented defensive players fighting for a starting spot, especially in the second ary. The most noteworthy spot is the safety position left by Ed Gainey, who's a freshman at Appalachian State. "We can't replace an Ed Gainey," Marshall said. "We do have a lot of competition going on in the secondary. A lot will be determined after this week of practice and the scrimmage (against Glenn) on Friday. I've been fairly pleased wfth the way things have been progressing, though. We have to continue to come together and work hard. This is going to be a long season." Note: Two familiar faces will roam the Mt. Tabor side line this year, assisting Marshall. Former Spartan head coach Bob Sapp and coach Drew Buie, who's a for mer head coach at Carver and North ? are both on the Spartan coaching staff this season. Sapp coaches quarter backs, while Buie coaches the Spartan defense. Flyin' High i ? Wake's Fountain completes tour of England CHRONICLE STAFK REPORT Wake Forest junior Kaley Fountain recently completed a three-game tour of England with the United States U-20 Women's Soccer National Team. The Austin, Texas, native will be a member of the United States team that cothpetes in the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup to be held in Chile in December. "It was a great experience to be able to play over there and then bring that experience back over here," Fountain said. "I think our team (Wake Forest) plays just as fast and just as good as the U-20. I'm really excited to compete in the World Cup in December." Fountain started in two of the three games for the United States in England? but saw signifi cant play ing time in all I iTi?r?. ? I three Fountain contests. The United States went 1-2 against the top clubs in England. In the opening match of the tour, the US dropped a 1-0 decision to Everton. The US closed out the trip with a 3-1 loss to Arsenal, followed by a 2-1 victory over Chelsea. "To be able to put on the national team jersey is such a great opportunity and something that can't be taken for granted," Fountain added. Fountain has returned to Wake Forest to prepare for the upcoming season. The junior defender will leave the team in November to join the US U-20 team to prepare for the World Cup in Chile. "It will be tough to leave the team," Fountain said. "Coach da Luz and the rest of the team have been very supportive throughout the whole process." Hill from page BI most of the athletes that represent the US. Notice how I said most. You would think that we should be cheering for all of the teams to bring home the gold. But that's not the case. I was a guest on a radio show out of South Carolina ov^x the weekend and I was shocked at the amount of peo ple that called in saying that they weren't cheering for the US men's basketball for this or that reason. I'm serious. Some people were talking about how men's basketball players like LeBron and Kobe should be talking about human rights. One caller said that he was sick of the NBA, and the million dollar contract players. A caller even said he wasn't cheering for the US because they were being coached by coach K. That caller was a UNC fan. At the time I thought that was funny. Now 1 think that's pretty stupid. Why is it a given to cheer for athletes that you've either never heard of or barely remember simply because they represent the US in certain sports, but it's debat able whether or not a fan should cheer the US men's basketball team? That's some $#@& if you ask me. That's just wrong. We should all be cheering on every athlete that partici pates with our Olympic squad. It doesn't matter the sport. I'm here to tell you that I don't know one men's volleyball player, or women's softball player. But I will cheer both squads on when I watch them. This is our country. Carver Fan Fest Aaron Bailey, who's the assistant AD at Carver, told me that Carver will host a Fall Meet and Greet Celebration on Aug. 19 at 6 pjn. The action will take place right by the sta dium. The purpose of the celebra tion is to bring all CHS fall sports athletes together and parents to discuss the upcoming athletic season, booster club, alumni associa tion, eligibility, college-athlet ic requirements and other information that may be of concern.- This athletic season will mark several key addition to the Yellowjacket athletic staff and teams.
