Otis and Bernice McNeil in McCall,
South Carolina. Bessie passed away
on August 28, 2008 in Winston
Salem, N.C. She was preceded in
death, in addition to her parents, her
husband, James Bowman, Sr.
Bessie worked for the Winston
Salem/Forsyth County School
system unui ncr
health failed.
Bessie was a
devoted member of
True Temple
Holiness Church
of God, where she
served faithfully
for 19 years. She
was a dedicated
Usher for 17 years
until her health tailed. Bessie loved
God and her fellowman.
She leaves to celebrate her life
six sons, Roger and Lloyd McNeil,
Michael, Curtiss, James Jr., and Eric
Dodd; three daughters; Bessie
McNeil, Linda and Brenda Dodd;
one step daughter, Joyce McNeil all
of Winston-Salem; two sisters,
Margaret McKay, and Carolyn
(Roberto) Patino; six brothers,
James Tedder of Bronx, NY, Otis Jr.,
Roosevelt, Frankie, Elijah (Jeana),
and Leevon McNeil all of Winston
Salem; seven grandchildren, Lewis,
Jamie, Amanda, Eddie, McKensie,
Tyesha, and Samuel McNeil; a host
of nieces, nephews, cousins, her
True Temple Church Family and a
close friend and confidant, her Co
Pastor Evangelist Shirley Gaither.
Funeral services were held at
1p.m. on Sept. 2 at Russell Funeral
Home Chapel. Apostle Wallace
Gaither officiated. Interment fol
lowed in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Rachel Johnniece Campbell, 80,
departed this life on Sept. 5. She was
born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on
October 5, 1927 to Rev. George
Washington Campbell, Sr. and
Minnie G. McBride Campbell.
Upon her graduation from public
school in Winston-Salem, N.C., she
received a B.S. degree in
Mathematics from Shaw University;
an M.S. degree in Pure Mathematics
from the University of Illinois; and,
she studied at the University of
Michigan, Howard University,
Cornell University
and North Carolina
Central University.
She received cer
tificates in
Computer
Programming from
the University of
Oklahoma, North
Carolina State
University and
Winston-Salem State University. She
earned a Diploma in Bible and
Educational Ministries with teacher
certification and an Advanced
Diploma (M.S.) from the Seminary
Extention Department, The Shaw
Divinity School.
Rachel retired from Winston
Salem/Forsyth County Schools after
teaching higher level and advanced
mathematics courses for 35 years,
ending several years of her career as
the chair of the Mathematics
Department at Parkland High
School.
She was appointed by Gov. Jim
Hunt to work on strategies for
changing the nation from the deci
mal system to the metric system. She
served on the board of the North
Carolina School of Math and
Science; the Board of Minority
Affairs for the City of Winston
Salem; as 1st vice-president of
Secondary Mathematics Educators
for the state of North Carolina, and
as a consultant for the first mathe
matics competency test for the state
of North Carolina. As a devoted and
active member of Zion Memorial
Baptist Church in Winston-Salem,
NC, she served in the capacity of
advisor to the Young Adult
Missionaries and was the director of
Christian Education at the time of
her death. As a long-standing mem
ber of her community, she served in
numerous social and community
organizations, including treasurer
for the Skyland Park Community
and Flower Club #3. Rachel's pas
sions were her spiritual life and her
family. She was devoted to visiting
the sick and shut-in and going deep
sea fishing with her nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; three sisters; and four broth
ers.
She is survived by one sister,
Martha Holman of Philadelphia, PA;
and an extended family of devoted
nephews, nieces, great-nephews,
great-nieces, and great-great
nephews and great-great nieces who
respected her dearly.

Mr. Robert Warren Crawford was
born April 14, 1951 in Forsyth
County. He depart
ed this life on
Friday, August 22,
2008. Robert was a
Baptist by faith.
He attended the
public schools.
Robert was

Crawford, three aunts and a loving
cousin who was just like a brother,
Mr. James Henry Crawford.
Robert was a great guitar player.
Anyone who knew Robert, knew that
he loved his guitar and knew how to
play it. He played with such groups
as The Gospel Stylistics. The Mighty
Wonders and many, many others.
He leaves to cherish his memo

Nathaniel Harris, Jr., "Dabby,"
went home to be with the Lord with
a smile on his face on, Sept. 5 at
Forsyth Medical Center after a brief
period of illness.
He was born July

N.C. Mr. Harris
attended the

Schools and was previously
employed at Merita Bakery along
with his father for many years.
"Dabby" loved his family very much
and loved making everyone laugh;
he also enjoyed listening to great
music. He knew most of the names
and artist of every song he heard. He
was also a skilled artist.
He was preceded in death by his
father, Nathaniel Harris, Sr., and two
brothers, Jeffrey Ramseur and
Darryl Harris.
He leaves to cherish his memory
his mother and step-father, Elizabeth
and Matthew Dodd; four sisters,
Linda McDuffie, Sandra Ortiz,
Harriett (Denise) Rose and Towanna
Harris; three brothers, Tony

Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home
following a brief illness. Born April
18, 1944 to the late Ralph and Mary
Jones. Mrs.
Nichols was pre
ceded in death by
her sister, Mrs.
Carolyn A. Porter,
an aunt, Mrs.
Geraldine Mack,
and a niece, Ms.
Cheryl Porter.
A native of the
city, Mrs. Nichols
joined ureamiana Baptist unurcn at
an early age. Mrs. Nichols graduated
from Atkins High School. She
retired from Forsyth Memorial
Hospital after more than 30 years of
dedicated service. Mrs. Nichols most
enjoyed traveling with family and
friends.
Surviving are her husband of 35
years, Mr. James Nichols; a daugh
ter, Mrs. Tammy Ross Cockerham;
two grandsons: Damon Jones and
Davon Ross; one great grandson,
Makynleon Jones; a sister-in-law,
Mrs. Lethia Coleman; a devoted
aunt, Mrs. Rose Robinson; three

made his peaceful

Friday morning,
Sept. 5 at the Wake Forest University
Baptist Medical Center.
He attended the local public
schools and graduated from Atkins
High School class of 1960. He was a
retired employee of RJ Reynolds
Tobacco Company since 1995 after
34 years of dedicated service.
Felix loved the outdoor life such
as gardening and working on proj
ects around the home and helping
neighbors and friends. But, the love
and sport of his life was fishing. He
had a great sense of humor and was
loved by many people, young and
old. He was a member of Morning
Star Missionary Baptist Church
where he attended Sunday School
and Bible Study until his health
failed.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; his oldest brother, Richard
Norris and sister Betty Ruth of
Baltimore, MD.
He is survived by his loving and
devoted wife of 45 years, Carrie
Robinson of the home; sons, Felix E.

Carlton E. Scales, Sr. 80, hus
band to Willie H. Scales for 59
years, father and grandfather, passed
away Sept. 13 at the Wake Forest
University/Baptist Medical Center.
Carlton was born April 10, 1928
in Walnut Cove, N.C.
After high school, he attended
NC A&T University for two years.
Carlton resided in Winston-Salem
for the past 60 years; and worked
and retired , from RJ Reynolds
Tobacco Company 1983 with 34
years of service. He enjoyed work
ing on cars and fixing them; this was
a great passion for him.
He was preceded in death by his
mother, Louise Scales and his father,
Valentine McLaughlin.
Mr. Scales is survived by his
wife, Willie of the home; his chil
dren, Carlton, Jr., Patrice, Cassandra
(Floyd) Neal, Darryl, Albert
(Felicia) and his granddaughter
whom he and his wife helped to
raise, Chantelle (Wesley) Johnson;
his grandchildren; great-grandchil
