Zion Church. Hines made history when she became the first female Bishop elected and the 98th Bishop in succession to senft in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and the first Bishop elected from the West Coast. The historic election took place during the 48th Quadrennial Session in Atlanta in July. Hines has serviced as pas tor of four A.M.E. Zion Bishop Hines churches: Waddell in Shelby; St. Peter's Tabernacle in Gastonia; Walls Memorial in Charlotte; and most recently at First A.M.E. Zion in Los Angeles, Calif. Sh4 holds a BA. from Mars Hill College; a Master of Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and a Master of Divinity as well as a Doctor of Ministry from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. Carolyn Dianne Jenkins Horton will give her ini tial sermon during morning worship services on Sunday at New Bethel Baptist Church, where the Rev. Dr. Kendall D. Jones Sr. is senior pastor. She is a native of Augusta. Ga., but has resided in Winston-Salem for the past 20 years. Horton earned an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Forsyth Technical Community College in 2005, where she was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. She earned the Bachelor's of Arts Degree from Salem College in 2007, where she majored in sociology and minored in religion. At Salem she was nominated as an Oxford Scholar and was elected to Who's Who Among Students In American Universities And Colleges. She was on the Dean's List each semester of her enrollment. She is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity Degree at Wake Forest University Divinity School. Sunday's speaker will be Cynthia Cain, the daughter of Church will honor Dr. Althea Taylor-Jones during a Women's Day Celebration Luncheon on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. and on Sunday during the 11 morning Worship Service. Known as the "First Lady" at Zion Memorial, Taylor Jones has been a mem ber since 1981. She has been instrumental in assisting with and developing a variety of ministries at the church.
