Adhering to the Holy Spirit
Lesson scripture: Matthew
5:1-16
Lesson Aims: To under
stand the events that led to the
Sermon on the Mount, to sum
marize the sermon itself, and to
strive for adherence to those
attributes by the aid of the Holy
Spirit.
Background: John baptized
Jesus in the Jordan River. The
Holy Spirit led Him into the
desert to fast and pray. After
forty days, Satan tempted Him.
Defeated, the devil left Him
alone to be attended by angels.
He went back to Nazareth until
word came that John the Baptist
was imprisoned Jesus went to
Capernaum (a town in Galilee)
to begin His public ministry. He
traveled throughout the region
preaching the "Good News" and
healing the sick (both physical
and mental). News spread
quickly in the area and the
crowds swelled. He also chose
the first four disciples ( fyidrew,
Peter. James, and John). Every
where He went from Galilee, the
Decapolis (region east of the
Jordan), Judea and Jerusalem (in
Judea), people gathered to hear
Him and to be healed . All of this
is found in chapter 4 of the
book.
Lesson: The crowds are so
large by now that He cannot
remain in their synagogues. He
chooses to go outside the cities

chapters 5, 6, and 7. The term
"blessed" means happy. "It con
veys the idea of being the privi
leged recipient of God's favor"
(Echoes Adult Teacher
Commentary). Jesus goes up
into a mountain. Traditionally,
this site is believed to be "Homs
of Hattin" (The Compact Bible
Dictionary ) located just north of
the Sea of Galilee. There, He
teaches the ethics for following
Him within the "New
Community." Christ begins with
nine beatitudes (joys of heaven).
To be "poor in spirit" refers
to humility, which blocks out
haughtiness. It's an attitude that
recognizes God's mercy and
redemption on their behalf. The
' followers of Christ must mourn
ovtr their sinful condition and
its consequences, seeking God
for guidance. Comfort comes
because they are living for God
and not their flesh! Another
character quality is meekness
implying their total dependance
on Him to get through the trials
and injuries of life. They con
stantly seek to be in right rela
tionship with God and one
another. They long for justice,
goodness, and peace that can
come only through Him. To be
in this new community, believ
ers must be merciful. God
extends His mercy (unmerited
favor) to them, therefore they
must do the same towards oth
ers. There is no partiality in their
to attend. The Rev. Clyde
Lindsay is the host pastor.

believers are to always be ready
for reconciliation and, if need

broken fences. The final two
beatitudes focus on persecutions
for the sake of righteousness.

plishing these traits will yield
two visible results. They will be
like salt and light. Salt continues
to be a major preSrvatives in
the world. An excellent weed
killer, it also prevents dehydra
tion and brings out the flavor in
foods. To maintain its power,
salt cannot become contaminat
ed. If that should happen, it is
worthless! Just as a small light
illuminates a dark room, believ
ers, the light are to expose the
darkness (sin) in the world.
Application: The new com
munity will be based on new
attitudes of the heart. Jesus
states in verses 17-18 of chapter
5 that He comes to fulfill the
Law not to abolish It. The old
community lost sight of God's
standards. He changes the
approach for humanity's sake.
