Baird selected for
Jr. Pan Pacific event
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
Kelly Ann Baird has
been selected for the Junior
Pan Pacific Championship
to be held in Guam in
January 2009. Baird is a
member of WSY Swimming,
the YMCA of Northwest
North Carolina's competi
tive swim team.
The top 20 male and top
20 female swimmers in the
United States under the age
of 17 are selected for the
Junior National team. Baird,
16, qualified to make the
Junior National team in the
Open Water 10k event. Open
Water is a non-pool event,
taking place in a lake, river
or ocean, and is based off of
placement rather than time.
Baird previously competed
in this event in the 2008
Olympic trials.
Baird will leave for
Guam on Jan. 3. A training
camp will be held prior to
competitions, which are
from Jan. 8-12. Baird eager
ly anticipates competing at
the Junior Pan Pacific
Championships.
"It will be my first time
out of the country," said
Beard. "I'll be traveling to
Guam by myself and then it
will be right into the pool to
train with the Junior
National coaches. It will be
an awesome experience. I'm
really looking forward to it
and gaining more experience
at that level."
WSY Swimming
Director and Head Coach
Mike Brady attributes
Baird 's success to her dedi
cation and hard work.
Kelly Ann Baird
"Kelly Ann is one of the
hardest workers that we
have in the WSY program
and this accomplishment is
more than deserved," said
Brady. "Qualifying for this
team has been her goal since
last year and to have made
the team now is a testament
to' her work ethic and com
petitive spirit. She will be a
wonderful representative for
Team USA."
