The event took place at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. The breakfast was the first time that an event had been held to honor Past Worshipful Masters and Past Worthy Matrons of Salem Lodge and Meridian Chapter, respectively, for their years of dedicated service to Prince Hall Freemasonry. Salem Lodge Past 1 Masters honored were: Brother John Lash. Sr., Brother Thomas Johnson, Brother Grantheum Johnson, Brother Maurice Crocker, Brother Julius Epps, Brother Samuel J. Cornelius, Brother Gentry Palmer, Brother Warren Renwick, Brother Preston McConnell, Brother James Paul. Brother Janava DeBerry, Brother Vanwoad Banner, Sr.. Brother Dan Piggott, Brother Howard 'Ward, Brother Arthur Spencer and Brother William E. Stevenson. Miridian Chapter Past Matrons hon ored were: Sister Areatha Broadway, Sister Carolyn Covington, Sister Carolyn Epps, Sister Christa Epps, Sister Betsie Henderson, Sister Delores McConnell, Sister Gretha Michael and Sister Carolyn Strickland. Sister Wyvonia Attucks is the Worthy Matron of Meridian Chapter. Salem Lodge Worshipful Master Richard L. Williams said. "I would like thank all of you who gave of your pre cious time to be here this morning to fellowship with Salem Lodge and Meridian Chapter - the best Lodge and the best Chapter in the juris diction of North Carolina. We are here today to honor the legacy of those who shoulders we stand." He added, "If you could put your finger on one tWng that truly makes Salem and Meridian special, it is that these leaders have not become drunk with power. They do not lead by the example of power. They lead by the power of example." Several North Carolina Prince Hall Grand Lodge officers attended, including Most Worshipful Grand Senior Warden Jackie Robinson; Most Worshipful Grand Standard Bearer Albert Wardlow; 28th District Deputy Grand Master C. Caulton Dalton; and Daniel "DT" Thompson, the Most Excellent High Priest of Royal Arch Masons. Salem Lodge Brothers Warren Napper and Rudolph Sullivan provided entertain ment. The breakfast was catered by Unity Catering Affairs. Skyland seniors club celebrates anniversary SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Skyland Senior Citizen Club celebrated its 57th Anniversary at Rupert Bell Recreation Center on Sept. 18, with the therrife "Pressing on for Change! Building For the Next Generation." The Mistress of Ceremonies was Hazel Black. The program was opened with the singing of "We've Come This Far by Faith." Dorothy Shipp gave the welcome; prayer was led by Shirley Williams; then scripture by Frances Ferrell and memoriam by Mary G. Britt. The Rupert Bell Choir, directed by Elizabeth Speight, sang several inspi rational songs. The history of the club was given by Jackie Williams. Lam Alice Dillard introduced the speaker. District Court Judge Denise S. Hartsfield, who spoke on the theme, "Being the Bridges for the Next Generation." Her insightful remarks urged older people to serve as an example for young generations, stating, , "respect never goes out of style." Hartsfield remi nisced about what her mmm grandmother used to say - things like "handle someone with a long handle spoon" and "by and by and you reap what you sow." She said she didn't understand those sayings when she was a child, but now she does. Dorothy Hughes made a presentation to Judge Hartsfield for taking part part in the event. Then, remarks were made by Mary Britt, program chairperson and Advisor _ Dorinda Phillips. Dinner was served and enjoyed by all. The benedic tion was said in unison, "May the Lord watch betweeh me and thee, while we are absent one from another." The officers of the club are Helen Phillips, presi dent; Vice President Belma Dobson; Recording Secretary Shirley Smith; Assistant Secretary Pat Keliy; Financial Secretary Lam Dillard; Treasurer Mary Britt; Assistant Treasurer Jackie Williams and Advisor Dorinda Phillips.
