Area Pop Warner look a
big step toward capturing a
national championship when
squads competed for area titles
over the weekend. The Jr. Pee
through Jr. Midget competed
last Saturday, while Midget
squads battled on Sunday All
games took place at North
Forsyth High.
The Kernersville Raiders
blue won a classic battle over
the Forsyth Broncos in the Dll
Jr. Pee Wee tilt, 19-14. The
Winston-Salem Indians bur
gundy took down a very tal
ented Grayhounds squad in the
D1 Jr. Pee Wee tilt, 20-0. In the
Division U Pee Wee contest,
the Broncos took down the
Raiders, 26-0. The Indians
shut out the Grayhounds in the
Division I Pee Wee game, 26
0.
The Forsyth Broncos
slipped by the High Point
Lions in the DII Jr. Midget
game, 36-32. The Indians,
coached by Jukie Minor, shut
out the Pfafftown Packers Jr.
Midget, 23-0. The Indian Jr.
Midget squad received an
automatic bid to the regional
round, which will take place in
Charlotte.
The High Point Lions took
down the Lewisville Titans in
the Division II Midget game,
24-14. The Oak Ridge Colts
shut out the Indians in the
Division 1 Midget game, 18-0.
Up next... The Division I
winners will play their next
playoff game here in Winston
Salem, while DII squads will
travel to Midland, SC next
weekend (Nov. 15). The Betty
Ford Saints (Charlotte) will
battle in the Indians burgundy
in the Jr. Pee Wee tilt on Nov.
15. The Betty Ford Saints will
also face the Indians in the Pee
Wee tilt.
The Indians Jr. Midget
squad received an automatic
bid to the next round in
Charlotte. In the Midget con

In other Pop Warner
news: The fifth annual Mitey
Mite Bowl will take place at
North Forsyth this weekend.
Games will start at 7:30 a.m.
Admission is $5. No outside
food or drinks will be permit
ted.
The Mitey Mite Bowl
schedule is as followed: The
Falcons blue (1-7) will battle
the Titans gold (3-5) to start
the day. That will be followed
by the Titans white (5-3)
against the Panthers silver (3
5). At 10:30, the Broncos (5
2) will battle the Vikings (5-2
1). The Packers silver (1-7)
will battle the Raiders gold (2
6). At 1:30 pjn . The Indians
gold (7-1) will battle the
Grayhounds red (8-0). That
will be followed by the Indians
burgundy (5-2-1) against the
Lions (5-2-1). The Broncos
white (7-1) will then play the
Grayhounds blue (6-2).
At 6 p.m., the Raiders (4
4) will play the Wolfpack (5
3). That game will be followed
by the Titans green (4-4)
against the Rams (4-4). At 9
p.m., the Panthers blue (2-6)
will battle the Lions silver.
Then, the Packers black (5-3)
will face the Falcons green (2
5-1).

Deacs ranked
in preseason
Top 25 for first
time since 2005

The preseason recognition
keeps rolling in for this year's
Wake Forest men's basketball
squad. The Demon Deacons arc
ranked No. 24 in the
ESPN/USA Today Preseason
Coaches Poll.
Wake Forest, one of four
ACC teams in the top 25,
received 129 points in the poll.
The Deacons were just one
point behind defending national
champion Kansas for 23rd.
This marks the first time
since 2005 that Wake has been
ranked in the preseason top 25.
The Deacons have been out of
the top 25 since early January of
2006.
Wake Forest has received its
fair share of recognition so far
this preseason. The Deacons
were picked to finish third in the
ACC at last weekend's confer
ence media day in Atlanta.
Wake has also been in the pre
season top 25 in a number of
publications, including a No. IS
national ranking by the ACC
Basketball Handbook.
With all five starters return
ing and a highly-rated freshmen
class. Wake Forest is expected
by many to be a staple in the
national rankings this season
The Deacs, with 11 letterwin
ners returning, welcome back
over 97 percent of last year's
production in every significant
statistical category, including
each of the team's top nine scor
ers.
Sophomores James Johnson
and Jeff Teague highlight the list
of returnees for the Deacs.
Johnson was a third team All
ACC pick and runner-up for
ACC Rookie of the Year last
season. Both he and Teague, the
Deacs' two leading scorers,
were selected to the ACC All
Freshman Team
Veteran point guard Ishmael
Smith also returns to run the
show for Wake, along with jun
ior swingman LD. Williams ?
the Deacons' top lockdown
defender. Junior center Chas
McFarland, statistically the
ACC's most improved player
last season, returns to patrol the
paint for Wake.
Wake Forest plays its only
exhibition contest tonight,
against Mount Olive. The Deacs
open the regular season on
Friday, Nov. 14, against North
Carolina Central.
