Good News to Spread Mildred Peppers Sunday School Lesson Scripture Lesson: Ephesians 3:1-13 Lesson Aims: To appre ciate that Salvation is given to all of humanity; to recog nize the mystery of revela tion; and to be ready to share the Good News with others. Background: As we study God's Word, more and more is revealed to us and our appreciation is height ened for the connection between the Old and New Testaments: You see, the Old -^Covenant concealed some things that were revealed in the New Covenant. In Genesis 12, God called Abram (Abraham) to leave his country and follow Him., There was no indication that this citizen of Ur was out standing in any way. After much research, scholars decided that God simply chose him. In addition to that, a covenant was made with him declaring that if he made God his God Abram "s family would" become a great nation; he'll be blessed, respected, protected from his enemies and would be given land" (Genesis 12: 1-3). Through this family, God intends to "ultimately bring Salvation to all" (Richards' Complete Bible Handbook and The Catholic Study Bible). Abram wasn't blessed simply to boast of his relationship with God but to model faith so that others will recognize the One True God and seek Him. It didn't happen then but we know that it came to pass through Jesus, the Christ (first mys tery). God's plan in the Old Testament was to eventually unite the Jews (Abraham's descendants) with the Gentiles (non-Jews) to form the church (other mystery). Both mysteries will be revealed in the New Testament. Mystery here "refers to important informa tion communicated by reve lation from God. Paul, the consummate Jew. well trained in the Law and a Pharisee, felt compelled to stop the rebel movement within Judaism. Once he had his encounter with Jesus on the Damascus Road, he was changed forever. In the Synoptic Gospels and Acts 9. it became obvious that the Gentiles were to be included. As it turned out. Paul and Barnabas were commis sioned to carry the Word to the Jews first and then the Gentiles (Acts 12:25-16:5). Following that. Paul embarked on his missionary journeys and was subse quently jailed several times. The book of Ephesians was Sec Pepper* on B4
