Darren was born with a rare condition called cystic hygroma (lymphangioma) which have caused soft tumors to develop around his face. At times, doctors were doubtful he would live. But the 18-year-old is alive and kicking. He graduated from high school two weeks ago. "Darren has been 'a bless ing." said Charles Roseboro with a smile. Charlois Fletcher praised his father. One of the employee involvement teams asked their peers, to forgo the usual pizza meaJs after breaking productivity records twice in one month: instead, they decided to use that money to make a dona tion to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Ncjrth Carolina. Thanks to ihe assembly . department, the food bank agreed and $ 1 ,000 is being given to help eliminate hunger. The effort started in December, when the compa ny held a food drive. Employees- then decided that they wanted to do something giving him the, abijity to raise his daughter the right way. "I was blessed by God to have an outstanding, won derful father as a role model to teaeh me what to do and how to go about doing" it," said Harold Spencer. "He left me the tools of how to raise a child and how to be a parent." Special praise was heaped on Mo Lucas, who is considered the father - though not biologically to hundreds of people of all ages. Lucas has been uith the Y for more than 50 years, mentoring countless young men along the way. Even though he retired 17 years ago, he still continues to be involved at the Y on a daily basis.
