nice about the adult that they
brought with them. The
adults then returned the
favor. For some of the
younger kids, it was simple
as: "He's nice" or how much
they like their uncle's X

Some of the older youths
had more to say.
"He , inspires me and
makes me feel like I can do
anything, even if I feel like I
can't do it," Darren
Roseboro said about his dad.
Charles, who told Darren
that he was honored to have
him as a son.
Darren was born with a
rare condition called cystic
hygroma (lymphangioma)
which have caused soft
tumors to develop around
his face. At times, doctors
were doubtful he would live.
But the 18-year-old is alive
and kicking. He graduated
from high school two weeks
ago.
"Darren has been 'a bless
ing." said Charles Roseboro
with a smile.
Charlois Fletcher praised
his father. Charles Fletcher
Jr.. and his grandfather
Charles Sr.. for all of their
wisdom that put him on the
"right path."
"Anytime 1 need a sec
ond opinion. I'll go to him
(my father) and he's always
going to give me the honest
answer - just straightfor
? ard." said Charlois.
Jasmine. Spencer, an Elon
University student, said she

never realized how much her
dad sacrificed and provided
for her until she grew older.
"He sacrifices for me
every single day to make
sure his baby girl has every
thing she wants and needs
for school," she said.
Jasmine's father praised
his daughter, saying she's
been an honorable daughter
and a good scholar. As far as

Employees raise $1,000 tor Pood Bank
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
Employees of Johnson

they wanted to make a dif
ference, by being a part of
something great. One of the
employee involvement
teams asked their peers, to
forgo the usual pizza meaJs
after breaking productivity
records twice in one month:
instead, they decided to use
that money to make a dona
tion to Second Harvest
Food Bank of Northwest
Ncjrth Carolina. Thanks to
ihe assembly . department,
the food bank agreed and
$ 1 ,000 is being given to help
eliminate hunger.
The effort started in
December, when the compa
ny held a food drive.
Employees- then decided that
they wanted to do something
giving him the, abijity to
raise his daughter the right
way.
"I was blessed by God to
have an outstanding, won
derful father as a role model
to teaeh me what to do and
how to go about doing" it,"
said Harold Spencer. "He
left me the tools of how to
raise a child and how to be a
parent."
Special praise was
heaped on Mo Lucas, who is
considered the father -
though not biologically to
hundreds of people of all
ages. Lucas has been uith
the Y for more than 50 years,
mentoring countless young
men along the way. Even
though he retired 17 years
ago, he still continues to be
involved at the Y on a daily
basis. One man called
Lucas, "my father when my
father wasn't there."
more substantial for the food

Team Hughes -r a small
