Background: There had to be some serious rejoic-. ing when the Israelites realized their deliverance. Unfortunately, many of them took God for granted and had little faith in Him. He continued to lead and feed them daily. Each time the people grumbled. God met their immediate need. Even w ith all of that , their faith didn't grow. When you look back at what He has done, when trouble comes again your faith -is to kick in and calm you. Having faith during difficult times grows character. Three months after they left Egypt, they arrived at Mount Sinai (Horeb). Chapters five through I I mark Moses' second sermon before his departure. He summons them to the mountain in order for God to renew His covenant with them. You see they've been wandering for 40 years. The adults now were not the ones who originally received the Covenant. God entered into a national relationship with them where before His relationship was with individuals (indirectly with descendants). The Chosen People were about to enter the Promised Land and Moses wanted them to be ready. In the valley near Beth Pear (east of the Jordan River). Moses calls them together. Joshua was commissioned to lead them into Canaan in chapter three. In chapter four. Moses applied the lessons of their deliverance in an impas sioned plea for "allegiance to God by being obedient and remembering who He is." (Richards' Complete Bible Handbook). The undisciplined people needed guidelines to live by in order for them to become the "holy community. Lesson: Moses urges the Israelites to be loyal to God and to remember His mighty acts on their behalf. He wants them to recognize that their behavior repre sents what they believe. Unlike the previous covenants. God is making one with a nation and not individuals (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). Moses recites the Commandments. The first four establish their rela tionship with God. Since He "is the author of their Salvation nothing and no one is to come before Him" (Echoes Adult Teacher's Commentary). Allegiance is to Him is first and foremost simply because He is! His name is not to be taken lightly (in vain). This goes much deeper than using His name while cursing. "Not taking His name in vain" implies that using His name lor personal gain, false oaths, frivolous sayings, and being callous with it is forbidden. To prevent misusing His name, the people began to use Adonai or Lord instead ol Yahweh. After siv days of labor, the people arc to rest unto the Lord. While slaves in Egypt, there was no rest. Now, freedom brings rest for everyone. The six remaining Commandments direct their rela tionship with one another. First honor is to be given to parents (all adults) in order to have a long and blessed life. While it isn't staled here, adults you must mind how you behave in order that honor is bestowed unto you in Hye in .i community, everyone must care fpi each other by loving them and respecting their life, property and reputation. The final Commandment Sec I csson on B3
