He's A Jolly Good Fellow An Appreciation Service will be held in honor of Jimmy Lowery on Saturday, July IS at 4 p.m. at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church on \oble Street. The service is being sponsored bv Bishop John tieath ana Belinda flapper-Daniels. He is being honored for his many years of service to gospel singing groups and churches through out the community. V '? : ' " 1 The Stratford Rotary Club of Winston-Salem recently awarded $2,500 college scholarships to three 2009 local high school graduates. They are: Lyndsey Grubbs. who graduated from West Forsyth High School and is attending New York University this fall. She graduated fifth in her class, was a iriem ' Yher.of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society, and recei ved several awards for dance "perform K/ _ ance. Anna Spangler, who graduated .from Ml. Tabor High School, will attend UNC-Chapel Hill.thiv fait. She graduated in the top 8 percent of her class, was u member of the National Honor Society and the ' French National Honor Society, served on Student Council in ninth and eleventh grades, and was a rvj Jf- ? 'Crosby Scholar. " Hiihnah: Hammaker, who graduated from Reagan High School, will attend Appalachian State University. i She graduated in the top 5 percent of her class and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was editor of J the school newspaper, served as the K-l 2 correspondent for the Winston-Salem Journal, and was on the varsity track team for three years. The students chosen for the 2(X)9 Stratford Rotary Scholarship were nominated by their high schools and selected based on scholarship, leadership, commitment to service and demonstrated financial need. Stratford Rotary is a part of Rotary International, an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service throughout the world and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, Locally; Stratford Rotary 's service projects include a partnership with Kimberley Park Elementary School and support of a water purification project in the Dominican Republic. Jasmine Pitt joins other Wake athletes, cheerleaders and dancers last December to wrap Christmas presents for local kids. ? Jasmine Pitt makes WFU Dean's List sI'U I \l TO 1 Ml CHROOHCy Jasmine Michelle Pitt has been named to the Dean's List at Wake Forest University for the 2009 spring semester. Students who achieved a 3.4 G PA and no grade1 below a C were named to the fist. Pitt is a rising sophomore and the daughter of Mike (The Chronicle's marketing director) and Debra Pitt. jasmine Pitt, a 2008 graduate of West Forsyth High School, is study ing psychology and history with a pre- law focus. She is a member of the WFU dance team. Pitt is also a volunteer counselor for the Girl Scoute; aieam leader at the General Hugh She I ton Leadership Academy; a volunteer at a local AIDS Agency; a camp coun selor at Calvary Baptist Church and a member of First Baptist Church. (Helping 2 Advocate 2 Research 2 Respond 4 You), a community out reach service group that helps local veterans, will have another fundraising sale on Saturday, July 1 1 from 1,1 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NAACP Enrichment Center. 4130 Oakridge Drive (cor ner of Butterfield and Oakridge). A variety of new HanesBrands items for men. women and children will be sold for a $1 donation. Some specialty items costing more than a $1 will be on sale as well, but nothing will be more than $5. Hot dogs, beverages and fish sandwiches \\ ill be sold also. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help sup port veterans and families of vets. H.A.R.R.Y. Inc., a nonprofit organization, was founded by Ciat Shabazz last year in mem ory of her brother; Harry Smith, a veteran who died last October without receiving the support and service from the Veterans Administration that his family says he deserved.
