An old adage says to laugh to keep from crying.
That may be the philosophy behind "Single Black Female," a side-splitting stage play from the
famed Black Spectrum Theatre that features two sistas sounding off about the difficulties fac
ing women like them.
The two beautiful, smart, professional go-getters, played by Jammie Patton and Candice
McKoy, ponder why they are single despite seemingly having it all. Are they

with the issues? They conclusions the women come to are thought
provoking, provocative, and often, downright hilarious.
The show is written by Lisa B. Thompson, a professor at the /
State University of New York at Albany. It is produced by Carl Clay, /
who has stagea dozens of productions and launched the careers of / *
several stars since he founded the Jamaica, N.Y.-based Black
Spectrum in 1 970. Bette Howard directs the show. She is the
reciepient of the 2003 NBTF Lloyd Richards' Directorial Award. \ *
She also directed August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" at the '03 \
NBTF. Derek Galloway is the musical director. He has played with \
musical acts such as Parliament Funkadelic, Doug E. Fresh and RUN
DMC. Lawrence Evans, a protegee of Larry Leon Hamlin and one of the
1l1! NBTF's most loval officials, is tne show's castina director.

W Actress Patton recently starred along Robin Givens in the national tour of
the play "Men, Money and Gold Diggers." Her production company, Pocketbook Pictures,
recently screened its first short film. "Skeletons," at the 2009 San Diego Black Film Festival.
McCoy attended the iconic Performing Arts High School New York City (the school on which
the musical and film "Fame" is based). Her theater credits include "Intimate Apparel" and "Love
& Marriage & New York City." She has also appeared on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Cupid,"
"All My Children" and "As The World Turns.
