Delta Arts offering late night dinners tonight and tomorrow SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Winston-Salem native Chris Murrell, a noted jazz vocalist, will perform on tonight (Thursday, Aug. 6) and on Friday, Aug. 7 at the Delta Arts Center's Late Night Jazz Dinners. The din ners were introduced during the 2007 National Black Theatre Festival to offer play-goers an intimate venue and scrumptious southern fare. The Center has also partnered with Bibs Downtown to offer even more menu items. Murrell, who has per formed worldwide with the Count Basie Orchestra, will perform two sets each night at 10:30 and 11:30. Claudia Shivers, a Republican who is running for the Northeast Ward seat that is currently held by Vivian Burke, stopped by with her daughters, Mikela and Jordan, to donate clothes. Attorney S. Wayne Patterson, a Democrat running for the open North Ward seat, con tributed boxes of donuts to the giveaway and helped give out clothes. He called the area the "heart of the North Ward." "You have to participate in the communi ty," said Patterson of his motivation for coming. City Council Member Evelyn Terry, who will be defending her Southeast Ward seat against several challengers in the Democratic primary, helped the brothers of Phalanx serve hotdogs. Terry Said she worked in the area when she was an Experiment in Self-Reliance employee. "It just felt good," said Terry. "It just felt good being back here." It was the first time Phalanx had done such a giveaway. The small, 18-member fra ternity often busies itself by sponsoring chil dren to attend camps and giving baskets to those in need at Christmas and Thanksgiving. Fraternity brothers also men tor children at Philo Middle School, wh^re Sockwell works. The fraternity started out with 160 hot dogs and nearly 50 boxes of clothes. At half past noon, all the food was gone and only eight boxes of clothes remained. With a dark cloud threatening rain, the event wrapped up The boxes of left-over clothing were loaded into a van and taken to Green Street United Methodist Church, which will dis tribute them to needy families. The members of Phalanx said they hope to do similar events in the future. "As successful as we have been - it will not be the last one," said Phalanx Brother William Smalls. hotels may get free trans portation to the Delta Arts Center, 2611 New Walkertown Road, by going to the Clark Campbell Transportation Center at 5th and Trade Streets, and tak ing the Route I bus.
