Skvland seniors Skyland Seniors celebrate anniversary SPI CI \l ro I HI t'HRONK'l I The Skyland "? Senior Citizens Club celebrated its 58th Anniversary on Sept. 17 at Rupert Bell Recreation Center. The theme was "Old Loyalties. New Lies! Building For the Next Generation." '<* - The mistress of cere monies was Larn P. Dillard. The program was opened with the selection "Pass Me Not." The welcome was done by Vivian Spears: prayer by Corintho Jordan; and scripture by Clara Ellis. Pat Kelly gave the history of the club. The Rupert Bell Choir, under the direction of j Elizabeth Speight, sang three beautiful songs. - The president. Hazel BtapE, ^introdtrc'e.d . gueijt speaker, the Rev. Dennis Bishop, senior pastor of First Waughtown. BaptiM ? 1 ? Club President Hazel Black with Rev. Bishop. Church. His motto is "To God Be the Glory for the Things He Has Done," He told the crowd. "Don't grow old in mind and spirit" and that "there is no retirement from Christian service." Mabel E. Johnson made a presentation to Rev. Bishop to thank Kim for attending. Other club officers are Dorothy Hughes, vice presi dent: Shirley Smith, secre tary: Pat Kelly, assistant'sec retary: Larn P. Dillard, Financial secretary; Mary G. Britt. treasurer: Jackie Williams, assistant treasur er: and Dorinda Phillips, advisor. All seniors are invited to attend meetings at the center on the first and third Thursday of the month. First Ladies will take spotlight at awards luncheon mm a \i roi hj chronici ? Delta Visions. Inc. will hold its First Ladies of Prominence Luncheon to honor "First Ladies of The Church" on Saturday. Oct. 17 at the Benton Convention Center from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Delicious cuisine, spirited fellow ship. words of inspiration, a fashion show and door prizes will be part of the program. Organizers say that First Ladies of The Church have been the unsung heroes in the Triad. The event will pay tribute to them and celebrate their special gifts. Dennis Leach named new pastor at Morning Star SI'I CIAI U) IH1 ("HRON1C1.K The Rev. Dennis Leach Sr. is the new pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Evangelist Parthenia Galloway. the church's interim pas tor, made the announcement this week that Leach, a native of Philadelphia, will lead the church. Leach, who retired from the US Army in 1993. was licensed in 1981 by the Pine Hall Baptist Church and ordained in 1984 by ?u~ n Rev. and Mrs. Leach uic ixwwaii Baptist Association. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Fayetteville State University and a Master of Divinity from t h e Interdenominational Theological Center at Morehouse School of Religion. Leach has served as assis tant to the president and execu tive secretary treasurer of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He also briefly served as Third Vice-Moderator and as Go Chairman of the Ordination Council of the Rowan Baptist State Association. He currently serves as the Treasurer of the Rowan Baptist Association. Leach is the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of High Point. He and his wife, the former Charolette Hagan. have five children and three grandchil dren. Friendship will have October Celebration SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Friendship Baptist Church. 1317 North Cherry St., will kick off its October Celebration on Tuesday. Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. with Pastor Nathan Scovens ot Ualilee Missionary Baptist Church as the special guest. Three other powerful men of God will also speak at Friendship, where the Rev. Stacey L. Frazier is pastor, dur ing the month. Each service will be a 7 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Joe Ratliff, pas tor of Brentwood Baptist Church of Houston. Texas, will speak on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
