What are the available treatments? As with any type of can cer, treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on the stage in which it is diagnosed. If the ? disease is diagnosed early, surgical removal of the tumor, cancerous cells, part of or entire pancreas is a treatment option. In many cases howev er, by the time it is diagnosed, the disease has spread to-other areas of the body, in which case surgery is not an option. Radiation therapy, in which high energy X-Rays are directed at the pancreas, and chemotherapy, which is when one or more drugs are given intravenously (through your veins) to kill the cancer cells, are both common treatments for pancreatic cancer, and may be used separately or together. As always, you and your doctor should discuss developing an appropriate treatment plan for your type and stage of diagnosis.
