There are 485 jobs you
can do for the city.
Here's one:
it's fair to say that Police Lt. Jimmy Samuels likes his job best on those days
when he can help a fellow citizen who needs assistance. "I was always the kind
of guy inclined to stop and help someone on the side of the road," he says, "so I
like that aspect of the job."
Samuels, 51, came to police work by way of studies in electrical engineering and
a job managing a local Radio Shack store. "On the weekends I was doing ride
alongs with my uncle (retired Police Capt. Tim Samuels). I liked what I saw. I
liked the independence of the job. I liked the responsibility (police officers) have.
No one is breathing down your neck: You're given assignments and expected to
complete them. I also liked the respect that came with the job....
"Finally, I got up the courage and decided I
would ask my uncle if he thought I could do
the job. And I was sitting in the patrol car,
getting ready to ask him, when he turned to
me and said, 'Why don't you put in an
application?"'
During his career Jimmy has worked under
cover narcotics investigations, supervised
the recruiting section, and worked in profes
sional standards and operations support. As a
police lieutenant, Jimmy oversees all the
officers in patrol district 3 during the day
shift. He hopes to keep this assignment
until he retires next June. "There's

no oiner piace i ? HKe 10 go. i
^ started out on the street,
ana i want to retire on
the street."
It takes an impressive breadth of job skills to keep city govern
ment running. Our employees are police officers, accountants,
surveyors, truck drivers and computer programmers.
Have you thought about putting your
job skills to work for the city?
