Continuing the work of Jesus
Church takes
commitment to feed
Gods people
very seriously
BY TODD LUCK
f HE CHRONICLE
Every Thursday at
lunchtime, people flock to
Christ Rescue Temple
Apostolic Church for a
blessing in the form of a free
meal.
The CRT People Helping
People program now serves
120 boxed meals each week
to whomever, comes by
between noon and 1 p.m.
Last Thursday's boxes con
tained a hotdog topped with
mustard, chili and onions
and served with baked beans
and a pudding cup. There
were also canned sodas and
bags of rolls for the taking.
Elder Clive Davis, coor
dinator for the program, said
the church is simply obeying
a Christian tradition.
"Jesus fed the hungry
and helped them, and that is
what the commission for the
church is," said Davis, the
son of Christ Rescue
Temple's leader, Bishop
Willie Davis Jr.
The East Winston
church, which is on Dunleith
Avenue, began serving 100
weekly meals in mid
September. The first week,
75 were taken by people
who came by and the left
overs were hand delivered to
local families who needed
them. There haven't been
leftovers since then. These
days, all of the meals are
taken, sometimes within as
little as 30 minutes. The
great demand led the church
to increase the number- o?
meals to 120.
The food served varies
from week-to-week. On
Thursdays, diners may find
baked spaghetti or chicken
in their containers. Most of
the food is homemade - like
the chili that topped the hot
