First batch of nurses complete Baptist's ED Academy SPt ClAl n> l Hf CHKONK t.fc Two years ago when the Emergency Department at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center hail 25 open nursing positions and no applicants, officials knew something had to he done. Thus, the ED Academy was born in July of 2<MW. with 10 new nursing graduates who applied to the six I month training program All 10 are female with some coming to nursing as a second career: two of them began at Wake Forest Baptist as nurse assistants. All 10 successfully completed the program in December and a special graduation ceremony was held in early January. The graduates are: Jessica Akers. Malinda Motsinger. Megan Taylor. Kristina Hutchens, Laura Newey. Katie Martorella, Christina Livingston, Shcena Norman. Natalie Lllnian and Jessica We I borne. The intensive program is struc tured to be a part of the regular ED orientation program so that partici pants don't have to gain the addition al certifications and specialized train ing on their own time and at their own expense - which can often be a barrier for lil) nurses. It amounts to u $40,(MM) investment in each person when all .the specialty certifications and education are totaled. The program was developed by Eve Tuttle. the unit-based educator for the lili team. It provides the structure and resources to allow an hi) nurse 111 training to learn in a pro tected environment before assuming full responsibility for patients.
