Under Rev. Mendez's leadership, me cnurcn is known as a symbol of African American her itage and a statement for social justice. His Pastorate has taken the church to high er heights of service to the community ana numanity worldwide. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., a tribute to Dr. Mendez in poetry, dramatic interpretation and song by Emanuel's Youth and Adults will take place at the church. The Church Anniversary and the Mendez Pastoral Anniversary Worship Service begins at 10 a.m. Dr. John Mendez The speaker will be Dr. Cornelius E. Battle Sr. of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church of Durham. Dr. Battle preached his initial ser mon in 1990 and was licensed by the Rev. Mendez. The Rowan Baptist Association ordained Dr. Battle. Dr. Battle served as the Pastor of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church of Pinnacle for five years before accepting the call to Ebene/er Missionary Baptisi Church, where he serves as Senior Pastor. He earned the Doctorate of Ministry Degree in 1997 from United Theological Seminary in Dayton. Ohio. His peers ranked Dr. Battle's dissertation as the number one dissertation. Immediately following the wor ship service, Shalimar Drive will be honorarily re-named "Emmanuel Baptist Church Drive" in recognition of Emmanuel's 96-year legacy of spiritual uplift, missions and evan gelism in this community and abroad. Salem Lake Road will be named "Rev. Dr. John Mendez Drive." The street signs will be unveiled at the corner of Reynolds Park Road and Shalimar Drive. An anniversary repast will follow. The president of the Forsyth County Deacons Union Ministry is Deacon Evalena Clayborn and the 1st vice president is Deacon William Harris.
