Class of 1 955 gives scholarship to WSSU student Charles Hicks SPECIAL TO TH1- CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem State University Class of 1955 returned for Homecoming 2010 with a scholarship for a deserving student. The Class organized, set goals and put into action a plan to raise $5,555 for a cur rent WSSU student. The amount was decided upon because $5,555 reflects the 55th anniversary of the Class of '55. The Class identified the lucky student through consul tation with officials from WSSU, including Kimberly Reese, the school's director of Annual Funds. Charles Hicks was eventually selected to receive the scholrship The WSSU Class of 1955 truly believes that few things in life bring greater personal rewards than helping others. Members of the Class say that when one thinks unselfishly and becomes a giver, then it becomes easier to develop many other virtues, such as gratitude. love. respect, patience and discipline. The Class of 1955 also believes that there is no life as empty as the self-centered life. Peppers from /xiite B.I ney? The superscription of this psalm staled that he was in the Desert of Judah. This arid, mountainous place was often used by those in hiding because of its caves and deep ravines It was in this desert that the Dead Sea Scrolls were found between 1947 and I960. Synonymous and synthetic parallelism (explanation a few weeks ago) are in this psalm. Lesson: David is forced to flee from hK enemies: Now in a safe place (the desert), he longs for God's presence. He know>> that God brings comfort and pro tection in all situations. Having witnessed His glory in the sanctuary (the Tabernacle because the Temple had not been built), David praises God for His role in good times and in bad. David is confident in God's faithfulness. Time and time again, he sees the hand of God working. In this time of trouble, he concentrates on whafhe has instead of what he doesn't have. He goes on to state that what God gives is much more valuable that anything that the world can offer. Are we at this point yet? God gives exactl) what is needed for that situation. In his depleted state (the world view), the king's response is to praise God verbally, physically and musically (vs. Deserts are a dangerous place espe cially at night, because the darkness makes it very diffi cult to see. Any animal or enemy may attack at this point In David's case, he had guards (rotating) on watch to protect him and his followers. He acknowledges that this isn't iron clad pro tection; anything could hap pen. Was he anxious? To some degree, but he doesn't allow that to overwhelm him. He rejoices instead! Without a shadow of doubt, he trusts God completely. He is confident that God will give him victory. As the ulti mate source of help. David doesn't gloat but recognizes that when others see the hand of God moving, they too will rejoice. Application: So. how can we do what David did? First, we must recognize that we arc never out of God's sight. The inescapable God only wants our sincere devo tion. It is paramount that we have a personal relationship with Him. This isn't a day of the week reverence (Sunday morning or Saturday after noon). This is not like punching a time clock. God wants our total devotion. David had his triumphs and troubles. We will have them too. The real issue is. do we have a relationship with God? This is ongoing and it penetrates every aspect of our lives. We must nurture our relationship for it to grow. We shouldn't wait for trouble to praise Him. Praise is continual no matter what predicament we're currently in Love is an action verb (calm down teachers) as we study and observe God's behavior. As we mature in our faith: we trust Him more, depend on self less, and remain humble as God works it out. As believers, we have to nurture our rela tionship with Him by talking to Him (praying) . listening to Him (study and medita tion) and by praising Him at all times. Maturity comes that way. As life hands us its ups and downs, believers can praise Him verbally, physi cally and musically. Whatever you are facing remember that God loves YOU!
