Happy Hill Cemetery
cleaning effort
The Happy Hill
Cemetery Friends will con
tinue cleaning the cemetery
on the first Saturdays of the
month. Weather permitting,
the next cleaning date is
March 5 at 8:30 am. The
cemetery is located at
Willow and Pitts Streets in
the Happy Hill Community.
Those who attend are asked
to dress appropriately, bring
gloves and tools. If you
have the name of persons
buried in the cemetery, bring
the name, the approximate
date of death and contact
information. For more

Democrats to honor
leaders
The Forsyth Democratic
Party will honor past party
chairs and Mayor Allen
Joines on Saturday. March 5
from 1-3 p.m. "State and
local leaders have been
invited, including former
Governor Jim Hunt. The
event is free, but contribu
tions in the name of the hon
orees are encouraged. The
event will be held at FCDP
Headquarters, 1128 Burke
St.
Parent Power session
The Gateway YWCA,
1300 S. Main St., will spon
sor the "Parent Power"
<March Mega-Session for
parents of Winston
Salem/Forsyth County
Schools students. The free
event will be Thursday,
March 10. There will be two
sessions: a morning session
(with complimentary break
fast) from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
and an evening session (with
complimentary meal) from 6
- 8:15 p.m. There will be
free childcare and a mini
resource fair at noon.

Zumba-Thon
The Winston Lake
Family YMCA, 901
Waterworks Rd., will hold a
Zumba-Thon fundraiser on
Saturday, March 26. The
marathon exercise event will
start at 10 a.m. Doors will
open at 9 a.m. Admission is
$5. Proceeds will benefit the
Y's Partner with Youth ini
tiative, part of the organiza
tion's Annual Giving

East Forsyth High
School's Black Student
Alliance held a talent show
case Saturday evening, giv
ing more than a dozen stu
dent acts a spotlight under
which to sing, dance and
recite poetry.

said the club worked very
hard to plan and promote its
first big event, which also
served as the organization's
first fundraiser.
"This is something that
... all the members seemed
really excited about, some
thing we felt would really be
beneficial to the school and
to the students and be just
really fun." said Caldwell.
In honor of Black
History Month, tidbits about
noted African Americans
were woven into the show.
As the audience trickled in
before the show, they were
greeted by an extensive slide
show - set to music like
"Ready or Not" by The
Fugees - featuring notable
black actors and musicians.
Between acts, students took
to the stage to read black
history facts, including one
about the origins of Black
History Month, which began
as Negro History Week in
1926.
BSA members and non
members were invited to
showcase their talents.
Clariella Marsh opened the
show, playing the piano
while singing Alicia Keys'
"Superwoman." Others who
dazzled the crowd with their
vocal ability included
Brooke Johnson, Dennis
Inzar, Briana Wilson. Kiera
Whitaker and Chris Leach,
who performed an original
