Bf> static, but progressive" (Hebrew-Greek Study Bible), implying ongoing growth. The term means much more than happy. It conveys the idea of "honorable or worthy of honor" (True To Our Native Land). Jesus sets the standard that believers must strive to fulfill. The poor in spirit are those who are helpless or the system simply ignores them. Not purely an economic term, it also covers the social stand ings. Those who mourn are the follow ers who are genuinely sorrowful for their sins. The meek are the truly humble ones who rely on God for all things. This doesn't mean to sit on your stool and do nothing! The hungry and thirsty long for what is right in the eyes of God. In verse 7, the merciful are those who care about others. The pure in heart continuously seek cleansing from God because there is no other way! The peacemakers live in this cruel violent world, yet the) can reconcile opposing sides. The) want the greater good for all. Finally, in verses 10-12. there are those who will face persecution (from family, friends, foes and the system) for following God. They will remain focused (on heaven) no matter what is set before them. Great is their reward! All explanations above come from the Hebrew-Greek Study Bible. Application: The ideals presented here are lofty indeed. No one can attain them alone! We must strive to achieve them by the power of the Holy Spirit.
