Book Club of Today turns 70 SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Book Club of Today, a community literary organiza tion, celebrated its 70th anniversary recently at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. Members and friends were entertained with a spectacular show from "Pattie the Storyteller" at the celebration. The Book _r T1 i ? *.i r * duo 01 louay is inc nrsi and oldest African American Book Club in North Carolina. It was founded in 1940 by 12 women who envisioned an organization of civic and literary minded women pledgecT to a serious study of books, current events and community service. Through the years, the club has presented a well balanced program of social welfare and cultural enrichment to the Wmston Salem/Forsyth County community. All 12 charter members are deceased, but their memories still lingers within the club as the present members continue their vision. The officers are Mildred Wood, president; Arthemise H. Must, vice president; Maxine Whitney, recording secretary; Shirley J. Cloud, corresponding secretary; and Mary Sawyer, treasurer. The other members are Delois Bailey, Elsie Blackman, Andrea Bush, Doris Hartsfield, Ida P. Johnson, Dianne W. Ceasar, Annie Hairston, Barbary Hayes, Doris Herrell, Aleise Jessup, Annie B. Network has appointed four new. members to its board of directors. The new members are: Adolfo Bricefio of the City of Winston-Salem's Human Relations department, Robbie Chandler of DB Alex Brown, Alana James of the United Way of Forsyth County and Daphne Holmes-Johnson, owner of Creative Endeavors and ? Events, LLC. "We are elated to add this group of new members who bring a wealth of community assets," said Natasha Gore, executive director of ECHO. "Their expertise, along with our returning board mem bers, will be key this year as we make important changes to our key programming and transition to our next stage." ECHO began as a pro gram of the Winston-Salem Foundation and has evolved into an independent non profit working on social cap ital and trust in the greater Winston-Salem community. Rotary Club of Clemmons helps make Dog Park a reality SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Rotary Club of Clemmons has donated $500 to support the devel ? opment of the Dog Park at ?Tanglewood^ ^ "This is a community based project that will defi nitely be an asset to our local area," said Club President Vana Bris-Bois. Dan Greer, a member of both the Rotary Club and the Dog Park at Tanglewood Committee, says, "The new uog Kark will present a great no-charge entertain ment option to both human families and their dogs. It will be wonderful to see kids playing outdoors again with their pets, instead of staying indoors in front of their TV or video games." The Dog Park Committee has committed to raising $150,000 from local companies and private citizens to build the dog park. Starting with a donation of $11,000 from Vulcan Materials to help pay for a parking lot and followed by a $30,000 grant from The Winston Salem Foundation and another donation of $9,200 from the Village of Clemmons, the Dog Park at Tanglewood is well on its way to becoming a reality in 2012. So far, more than $76,000 has been raised. A Jan. 20 fundraiser is expect ed to bring in approximate ly $20,000 to $25,000 more. If the project progresses as expected, the fund raising will be completed by the spring of 2012, and the Dog Park at Tanglewood will be built in the summer of 2012. DRIVE (S.R. 4325) TIP Project No. U-2925 Forsyth County The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold an open house fol lowed by & public hearing on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at the Anderson Conference Center at Winston-Salem State University, located at 601 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Winston Salem. NCDOT representatives will be available at the pre-hearing open house in the McNeil Banquet Hall between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to answer questions^nd rgeeive comments regarding the proposed project. The opportunity to submit written comments or questions will also be provided. Interested citizens may attend at any time during the above hours. 'l A formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in Dillard Auditorium. The presentation will con sist of an explanation of the proposed location, the design, the state-federal relationship, and right-of-way and relocation requirements and procedures. Citizens will have the oppor tunity to comment or ask questions. The presentation and comments will be recorded, and a transcript will be prepared. NCDOT proposes to construct a four-lane median divided facility on new location between Rams Drive [formerly Stadium Drive] (S.R. 4326) and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (S.R. 4325). A connection to Salem Avenue will also be provided on the western end of the proj ect. The project will include the reconstruction and realignment of the Diggs Boulevard / U.S. 52-311/N.C. 8 interchange and removal of the ramps at the Rams Drive (S.R. 4326) / U.S. 52-311/N.C. 8 interchange. This project is about 1 mile in length. The purpose of the project is to improve access to U.S. 52 for the area surrounding Winston-Salem State University, Salem Academy and College, and the proposed Piedmont Triad Research Park and improve system linkage for east-west traffic in this area of Winston-Salem.
