Semi-pro team holds first reunion SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Members of the Winston-Salem Sluggers held their first reunion recently at a local Golden Corral. Members also worshipped together at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. Fifteen players and a manager attended the reunion and shared many memories and great stories. , In the summer of 1956, a schoolmate challenged Vernon Cloud and boys from his community to a baseball game. Cloud asked Branson King and Ronald D^vis to help put a . team together. They went from door to ddor in Cleveland Avenue Homes to recruit players. Little did they know that this would be the beginning of the Cleveland Sluggers. The team played rec center league teams during its first year of existence. A man everyone called "DeDe" acted as the team's first manager. Their first uniforms were white t-shirts with a number and the team's name on them, and they first practiced in a field between Locust Street and Cleveland Avenue. Later, the team practiced at a field in Cleveland Avenue Homes. This is when Daniel Jenkins became the team's manager. Jenkins, who was affectionately known as Mr. Dan, not only managed the team but taught them about life. Under his guidance, from 1956-1962, the team won a total of 30 games and lost only two. i In 1960, the team changed its name from the Cleveland Sluggers to the Winston-Salem Sluggers and began to play semi-pro baseball, taking on teams from Midway, Piney Grove, Advance, Pilot Mountain, Walnut Cove, Ledford and Winston-Salem's own Pond Giants and Indians. After Jenkins' death, Lywood Gerald and James Benjamin became managers. The team won the Semi-Pro League Championship in 196$ and 1966. The team played most of its home games at Ernie Shore Field. The team start ed to disband in 1970, when many of its players started working and others went off to college.
