CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT
Salem Academy senior
Angelica Mack served as co
speaker of the House during
the North Carolina Youth
Legislative Assembly's annu
al session from March 23-25
in Raleigh.
She also was the recipient
of two awards: the Sud
Freemark Award of Service,
which honors students who
have participated in the Youth
Legislative Assembly for four
years, with three of those
years being on the leadership
team, and the Richard White
Leadership Award, which is
given to a senior-ranking
member of the YLA
Leadership Team who
demonstrates strong leader
ship and organizational
skills.
About 225 students from
across the state participated
in the event, which was pre
sented by the Youth
Advocacy and Involvement
Office of the N.C.
Department of
Administration. The Youth
Legislative Assembly is a
mock legislative session that
allows high school students
to voice their opinions and
vote on local and state issues.
Mack monitored debates,
sent bills to committees and
maintained order among the
225 North Carolina students
who participated in the
mock-legislative body.

committees before gathering
for general sessions. Among
the items considered were: a
proposed ban on same-sex
marriage; the introduction of
anti-bullying laws into public
schools; and the legalization
of assisted suicide for adults
18 and older. The YLA's final
report will be sent to the gov
ernor, members of the
General Assembly and other
key leaders.
"It is an honor to be a
2012 co-speaker for the 42nd
session of the North Carolina
Youth Legislative Assembly
because it exemplifies the
respect that my fellow peers
and the General Assembly
have for me, as well as their
belief in my abilities to repre
sent YAIO (Youth Advocacy
and Involvement Office) in a
professional manner," said
Angelica. "This position as
co-speaker also provides me
with the opportunity to posi
tively impact the community
and become more familiar
with and appreciative of our
political system."
