Mount zk* baptist chdbch OH SBEWST. ??***? Aneelou to help her church celebrate its anniversary SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE When the seven psalmists from Virginia set out on a journey to Winston-Salem to build Mount Zion Baptist rw.?u n?? VI1U1UI, uicjr auic ly had concerns - and possibly even doubts - but they stepped out on faith anyhow. Mount Zion was established in 1889, just 26 years after the Emancipation Proclamation led to the abolishment of slavery. These courageous pioneers could have settled in a cabin on a plantation and worked in the fields for their former mas ters, but they had a more excellent vision. After all, the Virginia singers remembered how they got over and how their faith in God kept them from being victims of lynchings, beat ings, and rapes, which were all prevalent for African Americans during those days. Because of their struggle and sacrifice, Mount Zion stands today in the beauty and reverence of God set forth by its founders. The entire month of May is set aside at Mount Zion to celebrate its 123rd church anniversary, under the theme "We've Angelou Come This Far By Faith." Each Sunday for the 11 a.m. worship services, the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Serenus T. Chum Sr., has invited a spe cial lineup of dynamic, saga cious, erudite speakers and preachers of the Gospel. Rev. Selester Stewart Jr., an assistant to the pastor at Mount Zion, will speak on May 6. A special Mother's Day service will feature Dr. Maya Angelou, a Mount Zion member, author, poet, actress and educator, on May 13. May 20 is Missionary Day, and Dr. Linda Bryan, a Baptist State Convention officer, will speak. Dr. Telika McCoy Wiggan will close out the month on May 27. The annu al church banquet will be held immediately following the May 27 service. The speaker will be Rev. Tour6 Marshall, the 10th pas tor of Grace Presbyterian Church. Banquet tickets are $10 each and can be purchased after Sunday worship services or at the church office during the week. Mount Zion is at 950 File St. For more information, call the church office at 336 722-2325.
