As their undisputed leader, Samuel urges them to return to God by putting away the Canaanite idols. He tells them to gather at Mizpah (Mizpeh) to fast and he will pray to God for deliverance. The pouring of water sig nifies repentance, replacing disloyalty with loyalty to God alone. As their judge (who pointed out their sin) and priest, he prays for them before offering a sacrifice to God. As their prophet, his prediction of deliverance will come true. The Philistines are defeated never to occupy the Israelites' land again. They are victorious because they have faith in God, not the Ark! Application: During this month, our focus is "Justice Enacted." What better way to enact justice by putting God first in all things. If we aren't in a right relationship with Him, how can we prac tice justice towards others? The point here is to high light the need for continual commitment to God daily, not just on Sunday! God knows our hearts, so stop trying to fool Him. Matthew 6:24 says it all. If each of us who profess Him would keep Him first (not riches, glory, and power) in life on this side of Jordan, the world would be a better place. Begin to practice justice towards Him today!
