La Nouveaute' Bridge Club gives to Food Bank SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE' The La Nouveaute' Bridge Club (The New Bridge Club) donated $250 to the Second Harvest Food Bank for its BackPack Program. The program provides food for young people who receive free and reduced meals at school during the | school year. They are sent 1 home with backpacks filled i with simple, healthy meals | that can be enjoyed during i the summer or on the week- < ends during the school year, i Members of the Club said they felt an urgency to i assist the program and will I continue to assist with this ' project. The La Nouveaute' Bridge Club was organized in March 1935. The Club's purpose was to improve members' bridge skills and :ngage in community out reach programs. Founding members included school administra tors, librarians, business women, teachers, and social workers. At the present time. Dr. Virginia Newell serves as president. The other members are Mary Andrews, Toy Beaty, Carolyn Black, Marie Burney, Kay Clark, Clara Gaines, Brenda Hodge, Billie Matthews, Rose Marie Norman, Ruth Oliver and Arlayne Tate. Carver class celebrates 70th birthdays SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The 1960 Carver Alumni Chapter, which became organized and re-acquainted in 2010 for its 50th anniver sary celebration, has held frequent fundraisers to bene fit the Carver School Scholarship Fund and out ings in the past two years. On June 9, the group enjoyed their "70th Birthday Bash!," an event collectively celebrating the the 70th birthdays of class members, at the home of Landis and Cleo Kimbrough. The weather, food and atmosphere were superb. Attendees ate, danced and reminisced throughout the delightful evening. Locals attend PDK's 72nd Eastern Regional Conference SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Members of Winston-Salem's Beta Lambda Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. attended the Sorority's 72nd Eastern Regional Conference in Bethesda, Md. during the week of April 26-29. The conference, with a theme of" Live the Vision: Building Tomorrow's Leaders Through Excellence in Education," attract i a r\r\ i ? i i ? Patsy Squire at the event's awards banquet. During the same period, the Anthropos, the male affiliate group under the leader ship of Eastern Regional President Gary King, convened its 44th Eastern Regional Conference. During the event's awards banquet, scholarships were pre sented from the Eastern Region to high school seniors. The Perpetual Scholarship Foundation awarded Winston-Salem's Patsy O. Squire a scholarship to support her doctoral work in educational leadership. Eight African-American teachers in Jersey City, N J. started the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. in 1923. The sorority has expanded throughout the United States with many educators as active members. Phones to be collected for soldiers SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Members of the Alpha Mu Beta service fraternity and the Student Government Association of Forsyth Technical Community College are joining the non-profit Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. in asking Winston Salem residents to help troops call home by donating gently-used phones. Beginning Saturday, June 30, residents can donate their phones at the Chick-fil-A located at 3343 Sides Branch Road, across from Walmart on Peters Creek Parkway, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Chick Fil-A will be distributing free coupons to those who donate their used or unwanted cell phones. Residents can also donate used cell phones at Forsyth Tech campuses from July i - July 31. Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist at the ages of 12 and 13. The charity has since provided more than 130 million minutes of free talk time to service men and women stationed around the world. Funds raised from the recycling of cellular phones are used to purchase prepaid international calling cards. On average, Cell Phones for Soldiers distributes 12,000 calling cards each week to bases around the world, care package programs, deployment cere monies and VA hospitals.
