???______ Omega Psi Phi sends boys to summer camp SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Psi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. recently made it possible for 10 local young men to attend the Sixth District Omega Boys Camp at the YMCA's Camp Hanes in King. This year, the camp was held from Saturday, June 30 - Thursday, July 5. The Psi Phi Chapter holds several fundraising endeavors during the year to off set the cost of sending children to camp and pay for their safe transportation to and from the camp site. This year, the camp fee was $360 per camper. There was also an addi tional cost for the two chaperones the chap ter sent. The Psi Phi Chapter is mandated by the Sixth District to send children to camp each summer. It is one of the many opportunities that the chapter embraces to impact young people in the local community. The district is comprised of undergraduate and graduate chapters of the fraternity in North and South Carolina. Young men from both states par ticipate in the camp. Social Action Chairman Brother Dana Patterson worked diligently to pull the camp participants together this year. The unusual scheduling of the camp, which was held over the Fourth of July holiday, presented 'Submitted Ptktto Omega Psi Phi members pose with this year's campers. some challenges. Brother Emory Jones, a member of the Social Action Committee, and Brother Patterson sacrificed their holi day plans to chaperone at the camp. The Psi Phi Chapter Chapter also invites camp participants and their parents to its annual cookout at Tanglewood's Red Barn each year. This year, the event will be held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 12. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased from any chapter member prior to the day of the event. CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT Piedmont Opera and the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus have collaborated to pro duce "Singing in the Summer," a singing, dancing, acting, opera camp for kids in grades 4th - 8th from July 30 - Aug. 3 at Summit School. There will be a short pro duction of "Carmen" on the last day of the camp. Singers will be taught solfege (do, re, mi) and other essentials used to read music. Steven LaCosse, managing director of the AJ Fletcher Opera Institute and an opera instructor, and Barbara Beattie, director of the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus, will talk about opera performance with the campers. Twenty scholarships for this camp have been underwritten by The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County power2give.org program. Created in June 2012, this program offers a creative form of online giving for its member organizations, allowing anyone to easily give a gift to organizations and projects they find deserving.
