See Calendar on B5 Convention continues at local church SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Churches of Greater Deliverance is holding its 24th Convention from Aug. 8-12 at Calvary Hill Church of Greater Deliverance, 4951 Manning St. The theme is "Operating in a Spirit of Excellence," from Philippians 3:14. Bishop Claude C. Turner, founder and over seer, will lead the service on Sunday, Aug. 12 at the 11 a.m. He was called into ministry and was ordained an elder under the body of United Bible Way Churches of Christ in 1975. In 1981, he opened a storefront church on Waughtown Street, which he named Calvary Hill Apostolic United Bible Way Church. It did uiot take long for the church's membership to out grow the small space. God blessed the church with a larger building in Octpber 1982, when it relocated to 2411 Urban St. The church later received its charter. In July 1996, Turner was ordained a bishop by the late Bishop Alonso McCloud, pastor of' Tabernacle of Faith, and Rev. Lula Williams, pastor of Hartland A.M.E Church of Morganton. After his ordina tion, Turner renamed his Turner Pouncey church Calvary Hill Church Of Greater Deliverance, Inc. A year later, the church moved to its present location on Manning Street. Bishop Turner is married to the former Virginia M. Williams, an ordained minister who serves alongside her husband. Other speakers this week will include pastor Waymon L. Monroe Jr. of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. and Pastor Cory A. Graves of White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Greensboro on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. Yesterday's service was led by Bishop Rickey A. Pouncey, who heads Judah Praise and Worship Center, which has been incorporated by Calvary Hill. Pouncey, a faithful and devoted member of Calvary since 1983, was called into ministry in 1992. In October 2001, he became pastor, teacher, and counselor of Judah Praise and Worship Center, located at 3450 Prospect Drive. He is mar ried to the former Barbara A. Shular. Submitted Photo The Sargent Gospel-Aires Choir has seen much success in recent years, including the release of a CD. Acclaimed group to perform at Grace SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Sargent Gospel-Aires Choir of the Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church of Washington, D.C. will perform at Grace Presbyterian Church, 3901 Carver School Road, on Sunday, Aug.19 at 4 p.m. This concert is a part of the North Carolina Presbyterian Church Fellowship Tour, which has as its theme, "A 2012 Musical Tribute: An Anthology of Contemporary & Traditional Gospel Music." The group is under the direction of Marilyn Etheridge Gross and Gwendolyn Hines Jenifer, and Kenneth Kuhn accompanies the group on the electric bass guitar. The choir will be singing selections recorded by some of the best-known singers, composers and arrangers in gospel music. The Gospel-Aires have been blessed to appear with such artists as Shirley Abies, Hezakiah Walker and John P. Kee. The group competed in the Kentucky Fried Chicken Gospel Choir Contest, receiving the fans' vote of approval. In 1994, they entered and won first prize at the Majic 102.3 Gospelfest, walking away with a $5,000 recording contract. From that blessing came their first CD, "God Did It." The members of Grace's Concert Series Committee are Rudolph V. Boone Sr., Kenneth L. Sullivan Jr., Louyse Tuffin, Kenneth N. Jones, Eloise Lipscom and Shirley By num. Rev. Toure' C. Marshall is the senior pastor of the church. The concert is free and open to the public. The celebration will continue on Sunday, Aug. 12 at the church at 9:30 a.m., when recognition will be given to Samuel McMurray and his fami ly. At the evening service from 6-8 p.m., long time members of the church will be honored at a Homecoming Celebration. Special recognition will also be given to Mayor Pro Tempore Vivian Burke. Youngsters invited to take part in talent show SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Emmanuel Baptist Church's the Amazing Summer Escape program will showcase the talents of local youths tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 10). The Beyond Destiny Youth Poetry and Talent Night will include singing, dancing, poetry, and artwork exhibitions. The showcase will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. at Emmanuel, 1075 Shalimar Drive. Refreshments will be provided. Local youths are invited not only to attend the showcase, but sign-up to compete and showcase their talents. Youngsters can sign-up to compete from 7 - 7:30 p.m. The showcase is an ongoing effort of the Amazing Summer Escape Challenge to motivate youths to engage in learning in all forms over their summer breaks.
