A Fond Farewell ' L Submitted Photo City Council Member James Taylor (right) presents a City resolution of apprecia tion to husband and wife Marlon Hubbard and Chevara Orrin during a farewell celebration for the couple at the Ma'ati Spa on July 27. The couple were among the city's most active community servants. In addition to their many volunteering activ ities, they ran an art gallery, WhiteSpace, that was dedicated to bringing art to the masses. The couple is relocating to Jacksonville, Fla. to pursue new opportunities. ? Peppers from page B3 believers need to be remind ed that God created all humanity. Just because thoughts and ideas are differ ent doesn't make anyone less of a person and precious to God! Apostasy is evident in every corner of the world. Leaders, political and spiri tual, are practicing greed, corruption and injustice to benefit themselves, caring nothing for the masses. God is not happy with any of it! Sooner or later. His judg ment will come - that's a fact. This however doesn't let the masses off the hook. They are responsible for staying in right relationship with God. Today wc have the Word and can study it. There is no excuse. We must endure like Jeremiah, for on that great day each of us must give an account for one's actions. Thank God for we can't do right, speak right and think right without Messiah. He fulfilled His promise to humanity. Amen, Amen! "(I'm) a little nervous but excited at the same time," said Davis, who plans to regularly visit home. Ariel Jackson's parents and younger sister helped her settle into her room. The Roper native is the first person in her imme diate fami ly to attend college. " I t e t . reeis good," said Jackson, who is majoring in rehabilitation studies with her sights set on a career as an occupational ther apist. "I'm accomplishing something and making them proud." Jackson said the four-hour distance between Winston Salem and home will make her visits few and far between. "It's going to be very dif ferent living away from home," she said. "I don't have my parents with me. No more home cooked meals, no one washing clothes for me, I have to do all that by myself." Jackson's roommate, fel low freshman Sha'Keira Rooks, also plans to study occupational therapy. The Roanoke Rapids native moved in with the help of a dozen family members and Mends. Rooks said she picked WSSU because of the pride she saw at the university dur ing campus visits and its small class sizes. She's the first among her three siblings to go to college and is looking forward "succeeding" at the university, which has as its motto, "Enter to learn, depart to serve." "I'm ready to go accom plish something," said Rooks. Her mother, Beverly Rooks, said she's been shed ding a lot of tears of joy and sadness over her daughter's departure from the nest. "We're very exited and ? * * very proud," said Beverly Rooks. "We hope she contin ues to excel like she has done in high school." The move-in was the beginning of a week of RAMDITION activities to i orient freshmen to campus. The week will end with a walk through the university's historic twin arches, a sym bolic rite of passage for new students. Classes begin on Monday.
