Local professor creates presidential Christmas card SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Salem College Associate Professor of Art Dr. John Hutton was chosen to design the 2012 holiday greeting cards for the White House Historical Association. Hutton's 2012 design features the 27th U.S. President, ur:n: n ? minimi nowaru j Taft, who was the first presi dent to own and keep an automo bile at the White House while in office. Hutton pre viously worked with the founda tion, which heads preserva tion efforts at the White House, on the 2006 chil aren s dook, " ine White House ABC." The book fea tures each letter of the alpha bet individually, with the names of the presidents and . words associated with the White House listed in five lan guages (English, French, German, Spanish and Latin). In 2009, the association com missioned Hutton to create a special edition of the book to present to President Barack Obama on the occasion of his inauguration. The cards, which retail for $17.95 for a package of 16 with envelopes, are available from the association's catalog and also on their website, www.whitehousehistory.org. Hutton is also author and illustrator of the "Sister Maus" children's book series, which is based on colonial life in the Single Sisters House on Salem's campus. The latest in the series, "Flowers for Mr. President" was released ear lier this year. The White House Historical Association was established in 1961 as a non profit organization to enhance the understanding, apprecia tion and enjoyment of the Executive Mansion; proceeds from the association's trusts, publications and other items are used to fund acquisitions of historic furnishings and art work for the permanent White House collection, assist in the preservation of the public rooms, and further its educa tional mission. Grant to feed local kids SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Recently, Mark Hairston, principal at Philo-Hill Magnet Academy, and Julie Puckett, a learning-team facilitator with the school system, visited the Food Lion store on N.C. Hwy. ISO to pick up the $3,500 check given by the Food Lion Charitable Foundation to the school to pay for food for stu dents who might otherwise go hungry on weekends. Lee Emmons, the store's manager, and Amanda Zydiak, the store's customer-service man ager, presented the check. "We will utilize that money to help our children," Hairston said. "A big thank you goes out to Food Lion." Emmons added, "I'm glad we're able to help the school and give them this money. I look forward to working with them in the future." The Feeding the Hungry grant from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation will be used to support the school's new BackPack program. Beginning soon, volunteers from Salem Chapel, a church in Winston-Salem, will fill backpacks with nutritious, nonperishable foods and send them home on Fridays with students who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school during the week. "Through their generous donation, there will be some children who won't be going hungry on the weekend," said Puckett. Puckett applied for the grant and began working to organize a BackPack program for Philo-Hill when she was the leaming-team facilitator at the school during the 2011-12 school year. She has since been transferred to Carver High School. Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation supports hunger relief efforts in "communities served by Food Lion. The Feeding America BackPack Program is a national program that works through ISO local food banks to distribute food to children. Locally, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina par ticipates. During the 2011-12 school year, 13 Winston Salem/Forsyth County schools participated in the BackPack program.
