SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem collegiate (Delta Alpha) and alumni (Delta Sigma) chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. won big during the fraternity's North Carolina State Conference, which took place in Durham on the campus of North Carolina Central University from Sept. 28-29. Local Sigmas were recognized individu ally and collectively for their talents and the hard work they do in their local chapters and the community at large. Individual awards went to: Nick Gilchrist, a senior English major at Winston Salem State University, who won the oratorical contest; Calvin Holloway, the Delta Alpha Chapter advisor, was named Alumni Brother of the Year; and Lakia Cooper, who represented the Delta Alpha Chapter in the Miss Phi Beta Sigma Pageant, finished as first-runner up. The Delta Alpha Chapter was named Collegiate Chapter of the Year, and the Delta Sigma Chapter was named Alumni Chapter of the Year. The winners will rep resent the state during the Southeastern Regional Conference in March. "It was indeed a great honor to receive such a prestigious award," Chapter President Reginald McCaskill said. "Knowing that you have been chosen as the best chapter in the entire state is something that the Sigmas of Winston-Salem should be very proud of." Brandon Browne, WSSU Chapter presi dent stated: "Our chapter turned 80 this past April, so this basically means that we are continuing the legacy of our chapter. We are the champions and are happy to serve by any means necessary, not just for winning awards but for the betterment of our com munity." The Alumni Chapter was very involved in the conference, facilitating three work shop sessions. Calvin Holloway led a work shop on "Image, Programming and Recruitment," McCaskill led a workshop on "Networking" and Darryl Prince led a work shop on "Protocol and Procedures." UNCSA high schooler wins competition SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Violinist Maura Shawn Scanlin, a 12th-grade high school student at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), won first prize in the open division of the 2012 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Competition in Edinboro, Penn. last month. The competition is a two part event with competitors from across the country first winning at the regional level before advancing to the national level. Scanlin won the regional competition at the Grandfather Mountain Scottish Games Competition. She has also won regionally in Charlotte and Winston-Salem in recent years. This is the second time Scanlin has won the national competition in the open (or sen ior) division. She previously won the open division in 2010 and the junior division in 2008. In 2011, she took third place in the open division. The competi tion is part of the Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival, which is an annual event hosted by the University of Edinboro in Pennsylvania.
