Peppers from page B4 say: "With His good Self!" Over and over the Scriptures record God using anybody to accom plish His purposes. Some were unsuspecting agents like the commander in Acts 23, Pelix, Festus, and Agrippa. In last week's lesson, Julius, the centurion, was tapped for God's aim in Acts 27:23 24. After sailing many days and facing a fierce storm, all aboard the ship arrived safely on shore. Some swam while others floated in on broken pieces. The island of Malta (Melita for the Greeks) is located 50-60 miles south of Sicily. (Check your maps.) Initially settled by the Phoenicians, the island was controlled by every major Mediterranean power; therefore, the Maltese citizens were very familiar with mer chants who docked there. The storm was passing when the natives came out to assist the sur vivors. Take the time to recall how God delivered you safely from your storms. Lesson: Cold, wet, and weary, the party of 276 is greeted by the Maltese residents, who tell them where they are. The natives are described as "barbarous people." This simply means that Greek isn't their primary language. (My how words' meanings change.) They respond to the party's immediate needs by building a fire. To come to the aid of so many (276) is indeed a generous act. Hospitality is extended without judg ment and any thoughts of inconvenience. Paul helps by gathering sticks to keep the fire going. The warmth of the fire drives a snake out of the pile. As the apostle places more sticks on the fire, the snake bites him. He simply shakes it off. Now the people, based on their belief system, think that he is a murderer, after all, he is a Roman prisoner. They wait for the inevitable death of the man. "Scriptures make it very clear that God's sov ereign will and purposes can be carried out in any thing that happens, whether the events are wonderfully pleasant, horribly devastating or somewhere in between" (David Cook's Echoes, Adult Teacher Commentary). What God wants will happen. Paul survives the bite, so the natives believe that he is a god. The leading man of the island, Publius, invites the stranded group to his estate. While enjoying the hospitality, they find out that the host's father is very sick. The apostle goes to the man to pray and lay ? hands on him. The sick man is healed. Word spreads quickly and all of the sick are brought to him and healed. The resi dents honor the entire party. When the winter season passed, Julius, his crew and passengers set sail for Rome with plenty of supplies. The Maltese people will never be the same because they've been introduced to Jesus! Application: There are many daily opportu nities to witness about Jesus. Witnessing doesn't always have to be verbal. When life brings adversi ty and you handle it with out being selfish, mean spirited or ugly, someone sees that. The manner in which we handle those obstacles speaks volumes about our faith. We do not have to be "big name people" for someone to take notice. Our nonverbal witnessing is powerful! God uses us all of the time. We are His instruments! Living a faithful life means rising above our circumstances to do His will. Each day, we must be ready to witness. What I'm talking about here isn't lip service or twist ing His Word to appear more than we are! Macedonia Holiness Church UTliod d Of The Apostolic Faith, Inc.
